Saw him defend his Lt.Heavy title in person in West Springfield Massachusetts on May 24, 1969. God...could he hit!!! I'd put him in with anyone at the 175lb limit!!! He'd KO Kovalev early...

 

Agreed. Mismatch. And the kind of ko's Foster administered could and did ruin guys. I think Bob Foster ruins Kovalev.

 

Gotta agree Sergey has never ever been in with someone like Foster,, those were different times! I mean I don't agree with the way it ended in the Ward vs Sergey 2 thought Sergey clearly won the first bout and the second ended with low blows which cant be disputed if you actually watch them on youtube, Although I thought he was on his way to losing a decision to Ward in the second bout.. Well I'd have been sceptical about Kovalev's chances against Foster even a couple of years back...But having since seen him stopped twice by two guys not noted for being particularly devastating hitters (granted, one of them was controversial and comes with some grey area), his chances have plummeted even further in my mind.

Part of the reason why Foster didn't succeed as a Heavyweight was because he wasn't really an adapter and was in a bit of a catch-22: he was too small and light to successfully implement his usual aggressive, stalking style which brought him success at Light-Heavyweight (Terrell fight), and when he tried to tame the naturally bigger guys by boxing a little more on the back foot, it was clear he just wasn't natural or comfortable with it (Frazier fight).

At 175, however, he'd have no such problem and I can't see Kovalev outmuscling him or forcing him on to the back foot. Kovalev's boxing skills are better than he's sometimes given credit for, but he's not the type of fighter who can do a stick-and-move paint job on Foster, or neutralise his power in close. At some point he's going to have to open up in big exchanges, and I can only see one guy coming out on top in that scenario.

I know it's simplistic, but if Ward was hurting Kovalev with body shots, Foster would wreck him.

 

Foster's 175 lbs was the same day weigh-in era. In todays' day before weigh-ins, Foster would be in the low 180's at fight time. As Foster himself said: "I just can't put on too much weight over 180 lbs, no matter how hard I try."

Foster would have his hands full with Sergey for as long as it lasts as Kovalev's an underrated boxer, but I'd expect Bob to get the better of a punchup, which I think probably happens, in 7 or 8 rounds.
