Sergey Kovalev vs Bob Foster

You've become quite the contrarian. Some of your picks lately have been horrific.

 

Can you provide me with a list of great lightheavies that Foster beat? How about very good lightheavies? Hint: a 40 year old Dick Tiger and Mike Quarry don't really count.

Foster never gets beyond PRIME Kova's jab, gets softened up and knocked down 3 times in round 8.

Kovalev's arrogance would probably **** Foster off, so Kov gets the Rondon treatment.

He'd destroy Mike Quarry. As would an old BHop and Pascal and Cleverly.

 

As did Bob Foster far more emphatically than any of these could too I’d wager (what was Hopkins KO% at Lt Heavy again?)

And in one sentence you’re saying Dic k Tiger doesn’t count then you use blown up Super-middle Andre Ward as an example of Kovalev’s greatness (even though he was beaten x2 and stopped once). If you want to be deliberately contrary at least be consistent with it.

 

Kovalev would not cope with the pressuring tactics.

Hell he got pressured by, and crumbled to, Andre Ward in the rematch. Fosters pressure was much heavier and intelligent.

 

Kovalev was one dimensional, he loped forward chin up high, putting out long jabs, trying to set up his right, he had no short game, and didn't have a clue about fighting inside.He was also a front runner ,when the going got tough he folded mentally.

Kovalev would not have survived the late 70's and early 80's in the lh division. He'd have been on par with the Martin/Lopez/Rossman type guys as a good contender. A steady diet of fights against the likes of Galindez/Johnson/Saad/Mustapha Muhammad/Conteh. The wear and tear alone is too big of a factor for Kovalev--who hardly excels at that---would wear him out quick. Can you imagine a beat up and shop worn Kovalev going into the ring against a Saad Muhammad?

Those guys all fought each other back then and Kovalev would have to do the same. For like 5 years of wear and tear and then worry about up and coming Mike Spinks. Qawi. And a little later a guy like Virgil Hill.

 

Factor also that Foster was taller, had a brilliant jab, far better than Kovalevs, a brutal left hook and devastating right hand and a fantastic ability to set up and deliver either shot.

Kovalev didn't have enough tricks, smarts, durability or adaptability to overcome this. He didn't hit as hard as Foster, wasn't as skilled and was found wanting when the chips were down in every loss he had.

Foster might have struggled as a spindly Heavyweight but he barely broke a sweat at his natural weight. He was as good as advertised and a h2h beast at 175.

 

Yeah, I dunno where this false narrative is coming from that Kov is a more skilled technician than Foster.

Foster had just about every single advantage in the book over Kovalev.

Skills would be irrelevant here, anyway. Kovalev plain and simple would be unable to handle Foster's power and handspeed.

Kov doesn't see any longer than 5.

 

Kovalev reminds of Jeff Fenech before his controversial draw. He had a aura about him but after the draw both fighters seem to age 10 yrs . Pre draw Kovalev puts up almighty effort before Fosters superior power and skills prevail. Foster ko late.
