Agnew has done a lot better than expected. Didn't even know that he has an amateur background, nor anything about him prior to this fight.

Although he didn't have almost any gameplan for attack, he displayed relatively good defense and countered Kovalev at times. He definitely didn't show up to lose like I thought and deserves to get some good fights in the future.

I believe that a well schooled boxer with a good defense, timing and sense of distance would have a great chance of defeating Kovalev (someone like Ward for example). As for Adonis, he run away for a reason.

Sergi looked great against adversity of low blows and head butts. He took an undefeated Pro who was a highly acclaimed amateur and beat the sh!t out of him.

    He'll KTFO Adonis

Kovalev didn't really hit his stride until the 6th round, IMO, that's when he turned it up. That 6th round was a beauty.

I'm not hating on Kovalev just noticing some weaknesses. I did notice him pulling straight back, was a little slow on his feet, was a little predictable and didn't roll with Agnew's punches well when Agnew actually did throw something. All that said he was the better man tonight but we will see in the future.

Bernard should think long and hard before he gets in the ring with this guy
He will end up in a coma if he takes the same shots Agnew took

Kovalev dominated the first six rounds of the fight, 6-0 rounds, 60-52 points, with the 2nd and 6th rounds both 10-8 due to knockdowns. Kovalev was relentless, constantly moving forward in straight lines, driving Agnew backwards, using his jab as an occasional pawing rangefinder, and pounding him with power shots with both hands. I was surprised the official punch stats had Kovalev landing 54 head shots and 56 body shots, because I thought he was mostly headhunting, throwing straight lefts and rights into Agnew's high guard. Agnew blocked a lot of them, but Kovalev was strong enough to still penetrate that guard, and the knockdowns in the 2nd and 6th rounds each came from a straight right followed by a left hook. Kovalev should have thrown more left hooks to the head around Agnew's guard, and should have done a lot more work to the body to bring Agnew's hands down; the liver shot that ended the fight in the 7th was surely available to him earlier in the fight. I give Agnew some credit, he fought extremely cautiously throughout, but it was the only way he could have lasted as long as he did, and since Kovalev was mouth-breathing by the 5th round, it was a smart strategy just to bank rounds. Agnew never pressed forward or initiated exchanges, but he had some success counterpunching, especially in the 2nd round when he landed 3-4 hard lefts and rights. Otherwise Agnew only got to Kovalev by fouling him, in the 4th round with the low blow and head butt to the right brow, and then later with the elbow to the left brow. Overall I think this was a good win for Kovalev against an opponent with some decent defensive skills. It's too bad that he's stuck on HBO while the rest of the top light heavyweights are now on Showtime.
