The winner of this fight becomes Hopkins IBF mandatory after Murat. I highly highly doubt Hopkins fights Kovalev. Expect Kovalev to fight for a vacant title in the near future IMO. If Hopkins does fight him, then kudos he would prove me wrong. Honestly I can't believe more people do not talk about Kovalev, absolute STUD who is going to run the LHW division until he hangs his gloves up. Bold statement but I strongly believe he will be an absolute wrecking ball at 175. Book it. He's that damn good IMO
Yes but Despaigne in the pros has been pretty average. The more telling result is the loss to George. He isn't on Kovalev's level, I don't think, and can't hang with him for long. It's a decent step up for Kov, but I'd stop a bit short of calling it a good fight really.
White impressed me against Despaigne and I've kept an eye on him since. He boxed very well against Dmitry Sukhotsky as well. Not the one sided fight people might think.
Hopkins - Kovalev would be a fascinating fight. - but I agree, there's no way Hopkins would face him at the ed of his (brilliant) career. What would be the point? Massively high risk / almost no reward. Kovalev is my absolute favorite "unheard of" fighter right now. Nothing flashy, just perfect fundamentals, a warrior's heart, and crushing power in both hands. His style is very similar to Golovkin. I don't see how anyone can beat him, short of a home-town decision. Sadly, He's in that same limbo'd space as Wilder right now. Hard to find top opponents willing to face him.
Oh right, I remember him beating Sukhotsky on the Mundine vs. McKart undercard and 'stealing the show' (although the bar was set pretty low for such a feat). Again, though, Sukhotsky isn't exactly a world-beater or amazing scalp to have...although he's better than Despaigne who really was a dud in the pros. It will be. White does nothing much better than Gabe C., who copped a ferocious one-sided beat-down. White is a middle-of-the-pack talent, a perennial contender also-ran type. Kovalev is blazing towards elite.
