Or its possible that Kovalev just came close to shutting out a guy who's beaten Tony Bellew and was robbed, Maxim Vlasov, Vasily Lepikhin, Doudou Ngumbo, Tommy Oosthuizen and was supposedly robbed with draw, Eleider Alvarez and was robbed, Denis Grachev, Edison Miranda and Michael Gbenga. I'm not questioning his skill level in the least, Chilemba is next to impossible for most opponents to look good against, and Kovalev looked better than anyone has to date. If anything I'm more confident of a victory over Ward, and whose to say Ward wouldn't struggle mightily with Chilemba?
Totally. It's like people were ignoring what Kovalev was doing and going ooh ahh when feather fisted got his shots in. He took shots, good hard shots from pascal too. He did seem lackluster in there but Chilemba was just nothing to him. Kov's a monster on an off night. Chilemba's lucky he got out of the 7th. Beat him up as bad as anybody in the 8th. Was kicking his ass through most of the rounds and even got good shots in the 5th. I don't think it looks good for Ward at all. I think if Kovalev comes in there correct it's going to be Hospital Ward for Andre.
For you guys that are going to watch this on HBO, try not going in with great expectations, and you'll see Kovalev won almost every round, although I'm sure at this point after a day of bashing your expectations have been lowered. Its about on the level of Ward's so so performance against Barrera. Only Chilemba is far craftier than Barrera.
There is a difference in getting hit with clean shots and getting caught flush easily with every punch in the book. If I were a Krusher fan I would be nervous the reason he won comfortably is because Chilemba had no power. Once someone with some pop or better timing starts connecting those shots...
What match did you watch exactly? Chilemba landed a clean shot here and there, most of his shots were parried slipped or hit Sergey on the shoulders or arms. Chilemba having no power is most likely part of the reason for Kovalev's defensive holes today when he had them.
http://www.insidehboboxing.com/inside/2016/7/7/compubox-kovalev-vs-chilemba Compubox says Chilemba clearly outlanded Kovalev. That doesn't sound right.
I also read the RBR before seeing the fight. After watching it, I gave Chilemba three rounds. All of the qualities we've seen from Kovalev before were all there. The power, the two-handed attack, the feinting, the half-bolo punches. At times Kovalev looked like he was pressing too hard for the KO. The opposite of his controlled performance against B-Hop. And he also looked a little sloppier than we've seen him since round 4 or 5 against Pascal. Looked a little ragged at the end. His few weaknesses were also on display. His tendency to get off balance. His tendency to fight angry and reckless at times. If you're Andre Ward, you're feeling OK, maybe a little better than before. But not much. But Andre now has 36 minutes of less-than-stellar Kovalev for film study. Andre and Virgil are going to burn the midnight oil watching those 36 minutes, you can count on that.
Well, Ward-Bika was kind of the equivalent of this fight in terms of being a clear decision with quite a few competitive rounds. Bika's mauling style is quite a bit different from Kovelev, it should be noted. Anyway, 116-111 seemed just about right in this case, though a slightly closer score (115-112) or wider score (117-110) would be within reason. As for the upcoming fight, Ward could make Kovalev look pedestrian, if he's able to get rolling, but there's little margin for error with the Krusher- and that's what this match-up is so intriguing.
