Dempsey was slightly taller, twelve to fifteen pounds of muscle heavier, had five inches in reach, was much faster and a much harder two handed puncher .. in addition the stylistic match up heavily favors Dempsey .. Gibbons was a James Tony sort of defensive specialist who fought a Dempsey that had not fought in years while the Carpentier bout was a devastating performance by Dempsey aside from about five over rated seconds in round two .. Dempsey stops Sergey in a few rounds ..

Carpentier rocking Dempsey is an overblown example people use.

Dempsey was the single most destructive puncher under 195lbs, bar none.


If you are giving up weight to him, you are either a defensive specialist, or you are toast very quickly.


I rate Kovalev, but this is a step too far.

 

I am more and more of the opinion that if Dempsey was alive today, and thus received the benefits of modern training and a little tweaking of his style (though not much) that he would be even greater than he was in his own time.

 

Dempsey was, has been said previously,...a different sort of animal...stronger, faster, more powerful, explosive and dynamic than Kovalev...it would be over within 4 rounds.....and Kovalev is perhaps my favorite modern fighter.

 

Dempsey, it goes without saying, would crush Ward too.
Dempsey, even in his old age, was a dangerous coiled spring..like a rattlesnake...a pit viper who could take a guy out at any time.

 

Dempsey in one or two...kovalez will come to fight and get destroyed

 

Archie Moore was interviewed on some boxing themed tv show years ago and he made a point of emphasizing how physically strong Dempsey was for his size....Moore was evidently impressed by Dempsey.

I remember the thread where guys were saying he would destroy some of the best and most proven Light Heavyweights of all time.

The guy loses 1 fight by a very controversial decision and suddenly he is now chopped liver?
I still have Dempsey winning as a CW but Kovalev gives him a better fight than some of the
guys he fought while HW champ.
