No such thing as a "prime" LHW Toney, his time at the weight was pretty much the dark ages of his career. If it was a Toney moving up from SMW to take on Kovalev, I'd say Toney, he was far too good, accurate and sturdy on the inside, too cute to be hit by Kovalev on the outside. Toney would rough him up and if there is any chin deficiency whatsoever, Toney would stop him late. Disclaimer: I like Kovalev and think he's currently p4p #1, but Toney is a bad style for him.
you mean like Roy Jones Jr did? No, Kovalev probably won't, but people here are forgetting that Roy schooled Toney like a kindergarten virgin. And don't tell me Toney was "drained". Gil Clancy was saying during the fight that Toney, who had recently fought as a MW, looked like he was "Dragging an albatross" with the additional 8 pounds. So bottom line is Toney was in shape for the RJJ fight, wasn't "drained' and he got his butt kicked for 12 rounds.
I want to see Ward / Kova. Maybe it's that we've gotten so used to seeing Sergei absolutely destroy guys that when Chilemba gave him a hard fight it was a shock.
Jones Jr against Toney is either the 1st or 2nd greatest performance of the last 30 years. Nobody shits on Toney for what happened to him against Jones. He was just up against a buzz saw that night.
I love some RJJ, I really do, even though I was on the losing end of that fight it was fantastic to watch. But JT was not 100% that night, his own fault really but it is what it is, Peak Toney would get a few W's if he fought peak RJJ 10 times. Just my opinion
Tony has this mythical beast about him and I just don't get it. He was a terrible 175 fighter. Kov via wide UD.
Yes, RJJ was certainly great that night and maybe Toney does win a couple from him over time. I'd have liked to have seen a rematch between the two at LHW or CW. It would have been a big moneymaker; I wonder why it never happened.
