Gatti gets in on heart and determination alone. 100% HOFer. The wars and bloodshed he went through...you can't deny him. The Hall of Fame isn't all about being the most skilled or having the best record...sure the epic skills help but really its about becoming famous and entertaining people. Everyone and their mother knows who Gatti was. You ask 10 random guys walkin down the street who Sergey Kovalev is and 9 of them(most likely all 10) wouldn't recognize him by name or picture. They called it the Hall of Fame for a reason and unfortunately Kovalev isn't famous enough. Marlon Starling is slightly before my time but I've heard of him on many occasions....enough so that I've watched any of his footage I've been able to find..so he may be worth takin a look at for the HOF. The thing is...I don't think we're gonna be hearing about Kovalev down the road. I can't see Max Kellerman bringing him up in conversations in the future when there are dudes like GGG and Canelo taking up that real estate. I think he'll be overshadowed in the long run. But hey that's just my opinion and I don't think Ward belongs anywhere near the HOF either.
Good points. I just have a hard time with Gatti being in. If he’s in, I can’t wait to see the inclusion ceremony for Chico Corrales (RIP).
Good point Saint Pat. I’m just projecting a hundred years into the future, when fans will assume Gatti was truly worthy of inclusion. Especially since he really doesn’t belong. As for Kovalev, everyone likes to disregard his victory over an old Hopkins. Problem is nobody, not even Prime Roy, had ever dominated Hopkins as thoroughly as Kovalev did. Plus, when he lost to Kovalev, Hopkins was still consistently beating guys nearly half his age.
If excitement is the criteria for a Gatti, when can we expect to see Chico Corrales? Chico/Castillo 1 provided way more drama than all 3 Gatti/Ward fights put together. Plus Chico/Castillo 1 was fought at a way higher level. You’re right about Kovalev. I disagree with you about Arturo Gatti. Ask 10 people on the street if they know Arturo Gatti and they’ll answer that he must be related to John Gotti. Even though I’m not a fan of his, Ward definitely belongs in the HOF. By your logic, it’s okay to include a good (not great) fighter like Gatti, and exclude Ward who has not lost a fight since he was 12 years old...SMH. Are you Italian or French-Canadian?
I don't think he'll be in the HOF, but then, as someone said, Gatti is in the HOF so who knows. Pipino Cuevas is also in the HOF on the basis of winning a world title at 18 and being a DOMNANT world champion in a glamour division for 3 years. He knocked out his first 11 title defenses. But Pipino finished 28-7 and is best know for getting destroyed by two of the best ever.
Shows how poor the very recent and current era is when some feel Kovalev deserves consideration. You'd think he would when you think "been a top P4P'er for years." But then you look back at how shallow of a standard that is nowadays. He was very good and did things but lets be real, look at his list of top 5 or 10 victories it just doesn't rate among a HOF standard. EDIT: at the same time I think I have shouted out some relative obscure guys as worthy of "consideration" or a shout out. Kovalev is at the worst that.
lol I'm from eastern Canada...no French in me though...Irish and Scottish I think mostly. As for Chico...that guy should be in the HOF already as far as I'm concerned. And with Ward (Andre) and Gatti...its obvious Ward has far superior skills...its just that in my opinion those skills don't add up to an entertaining fighter for me...many times I start watching a Ward fight rooting for him to kick some ass...then before the fight is over I do a 180 and I'm rooting for the upset KO lol...so yeah I guess I'm a little biased and my personal HOF criteria has almost everything to do with entertainment haha. Although there are exceptions....I can't find a way to make myself believe Mayweather doesn't belong no matter how much I dislike his style of fighting lol.
Exactly. I thought the Gatti/Joe Cal class was easily the worst in IBHOF history. There's no need to keep going that low time and again. And honestly, Kovalev's resume isn't all that thin compared to Joe's. Give him the win over Ward in the first fight, and it might even be better.
If everyone who's held a title and 'had a few good names on their resume' made it, there'd be a thousand more boxers in the HOF.
