Sergio Martinez coming out to Iron Maiden's Wicker Man. Love that it's Maiden, but song choice wise..... hopefully that's not a harbinger.

    Round 1

Martínez is down in the first twenty seconds as they exchange jabs - but unclench your buttholes, it was just a slip. Referee makes that clear with hand gestures, calling off the anxious crowd who thought maybe it was a KD. There is a loud and ROWDY contingent of British fans in Mac's corner, starting up a "walking in a McGowan wonderland" singsong chant and persisting for much of the round. Anyway, they're circling and jabbing. Not much exciting to report, aside from the slip-down, and the drunk Brits. Martínez pokes in a few left hands on the navel. He flurries up top and forces McGowan to shrimp and turn away. Martínez looking to decapitate McGowan with a 1-2, but can't locate him with the second punch. Instead he switches tacks and tries floating a high right jab in the face, and then bringing the left cross into his belly instead. That works. A couple of times, and then McGowan starts to edge his way outside pawing a tentative defensive left jab.

    10-9 Martínez

McGowan actually got in a sneaky uppercut behind a double jab, that I only just noticed in the slow mo replays. He isn't half bad at his craft...but nothing so far suggests he won't get washed provided the old man's body holds up.

    Round 1: Martinez 10-9 (Close)

McGowan starts off running behind a tight guard whereas Martinez looks assured with slow but solid pressure. Martinez lunges and falls over. As the round goes on, McGowan gets a bit more confidence and lands a very good right uppercut left hook combo. Martinez lands some solid jabs on the front foot to end the round and nicks it on pressure if nothing else.

    Round 2

Martínez is doing his classic trademark both arms down, chin out, shoulders drooping, twitchy gimmick, daring McGowan to strike first so he can force-feed him a speedy counter from the waist. McGowan is uninterested in taking his bait, circling wide. Martínez presses in behind a southpaw jab flipped up off his front thigh, and then BLASTS his opponent in the face with a gnarly left that may have caused a glove to brush the canvas. Weird, no count from the ref but that could have been grounds for a ten count to be started. (edit: just saw the replay from a different angle - no touch, just spun around but got his balance again immediately). Definitely rung McGowan's bell. The rest of the round is more docile, Martínez just stalking and jabbing off the hip some more.

    Round 2: Martinez 10-9

Martinez much more comfortable that round with his hands round his waist and pop shotting. McGowan is clearly scared of his power and is just moving a lot - potentially hoping to tire him as the fight goes on. Martinez is winning the fight with his solid right jab over McGowan’s left. A solid left hand momentarily wobbles McGowan which only serves to make him run more. Easy round for Maravilla - looks like I should have wiped my bum with that 20 quid I put on McGowan.

    Round 3

Martínez is doing his squat and lean in deal, wrists at rest on his knees, and toying with McGowan. Right jabs up top, and lefts wherever he feels like putting them. McGowan very tentative, mostly running. A few times McGowan drops anchor, tosses out a couple of probing left jabs, and tries for an overhand right but Martínez counters him away with alacrity. Martínez plugs McGowan in the gut with a couple of straight blows and then pauses a moment to clasp a palm to his nose and blow a snot rocket. Not his Sexiest moment. A few light backfoot jabs scored by McGowan as Martínez slinks in close without throwing anything.

    10-9 Martínez

    30-27 Martínez
