Reading rite now that sergio is already willing to fight cotto next june, in a catchweight . Probably 156 Canelo is the other option Like or hate cotto, he goes for the best fights
Top Rank, Team Cotto, and HBO are going to have to lose on some money if they choose Sergio over Canelo. But the way I see it, Sergio vs. Cotto on HBO PPV is what will happen. HBO needs to get back into the PPV industry after balking all year while Showtime put on two big PPV events and will do a third in December... Especially when one factors in the mismatch of Pac/Rios main event and the dull undercards of both HBO PPV's this year.
Yeah he certainly does. I just wish that he'd be slightly more selective...especially at this point in his career, when he's basically made all the money he'll ever need and everyone wants to fight him. Legacy should be his main concern at this point and I just don't see him beating even a 75% healthy Sergio. Then again, maybe these are the only kinds of fights he can get motivated for.
PPV? I don't know man. Cotto's gonna need to take Molina 's strap(assuming he gets past Delvin) and Sergio's gonna need a decent comeback victory for this to be PPV worthy, IMO. I know it's Miguel Cotto and everything, but neither guy has looked all that great lately...
Sergio if he recovers well , is a dangerous and potencially harmful fight for miguel, but for me as a fan, i want to see him go on a high note and get that signature win before retirement
Broner vs. Maidana will be on Showtime PPV in December. Edit: I prefer Cotto vs. Alvarez at 154 as opposed to either against Sergio at 160 or a catchweight. Alvarez vs. Sergio is obviously the better fight than Cotto vs. Sergio. If Broner vs. Maidana can headline, than so too can "Cotto moving up to take on the best MW since Hopkins." It definitely has a selling aspect to it. And one of the biggest draws + one of the best fighters is not a bad recipe. And not so much the match itself, but the state HBO is in. It gives them a great opportunity for the winner to face GGG on a PPV in the fall, as he will surely have a couple more fights in that time span himself. They need to build stars and the top brass has indicated multiple times in different interviews that they intend to do that with their current crop of guys including GGG, Kovalev, Ward, and Mikey Garcia. I doubt JMM or Bradley, regardless of who wins, will fight again in the first half of 2014 based on what we've seen in their recent career unless HBO can pony up for a mega fight rematch between themselves or including Pacquiao. And they'd have no one to square off with anyway.
They shouldn't be looking past Delvin like this. But, I would love a Martinez vs Cotto fight, even if its a case of better late then never.
he needs to win his next fight first. a PPV is a given for Cotto-Martinez. To even question that is insane.
wouldnt cotto be the front runner for sergio? you make it sound like there is some kind of cotto sweepstakes. the guy has lost 3 out of his last 6 fights and he really has no business fighting for sergios middleweight title. hes not even a very good junior middle and will get clowned if he fights sergio
Cotto will take the Sergio fight over Canelo, purely due to the fact he wants that 4th title in the 4th division & beat Tito's record of 3 in 3. Trouble with that plan is Sergio detroys him & so does Canelo & thats IF he gets passed Rodriguez. Cotto would be best served moving back down to 147 & fight guys his own size. Sergio should take the Cotto fight as his first fight back & as a tune up for GGG. How about Sergio vs Cotto & GGG vs Chavez Jr (if he can make weight) on PPV?
Sergio is hunting for paydays. Everyone knows that. cotto one of the fighters who could get him a big pay sday. cotto is choosing between canelo and sergio, not the other way around. In fact, when sergio says he is willing to go down in weight for this, then you know who has pull in this
Cotto is clearly a Junior Middleweight, man. He hasn't fought at WW in 4 years. He has never weighed in below 152 for any of his 5 fights at JMW. When questioned he has only ever said that he is not moving down in weight. --- What it is about the above that leads people to claim Cotto should be at WW, could make WW, would be better suited at WW, is a real WW, etc etc... I will never know.
I agree Cotto takes Sergio over Canelo. Good point about the 4 in 4 to pass Tito, I hadn't thought of it honestly. I agree both Sergio and Cotto beat him. And I think he gets past Delvin with only small hiccups at worst. If he doesn't, he needs to retire immediately. Cotto even at MW seems wrong to call a tune up, especially at a CW of 156 if that's true. Sergio hasn't made that in like 5 years... But yes, Sergio and Cotto both have the end of their careers in sight so it would seem appropriate.
Well let's see: His last 2 fights at welterweight he weighed in at 146 & 145 so he was clearly not struggling to make weight, he fought Margarito at a catchweight of 153 & will get beat by any of the top fighters at 154 because he is too small. A move back to 147 would be beneficial for him weather he wants to move back down or not.
