Undisputed World Middleweight Champion and no1 LMW Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez is vacating the WBC 154lbs belt according to sources close to the team which means he'll remain the WBC 160lbs champion and will fight on as a Middleweight. If it's becomes official, he'll have to take on mandatory interim champ Sebastian Zbik, an often overlooked and pretty skilled player in the division. Zbik is 29-0 with 10KOs and fights under German Universum/Spotlight.

Of course the World MW Championship worth more than an ABC belt at 154, but for the sake of a Maravilla superfight, I would've preferred to stay at LMW and fight Miguel Cotto in an unification, but you can bet your house on that Bob Arum will never let his cash cow in the same ring with Martinez, even it'd be a highly competitive bout. Of course Williams is looking for a 147lbs return, Margarito is waiting for another Top Rank Limited showdown, Mosley is out of the picture maybe for good, and no other big name is on the horizon unfortunately as Alfredo Angulo would rather force his mandatory vs. Sergiy Dzinziruk (would lose that fight as well of course).

Anyway, with no HBO date fixed for the P4P-er, looks like Martinez will have to take on a lesser known fighter, his great story to the top and of course the people's win over Williams didn't help his case one bit, he's just as avoided as before.

That's a shame to me. The 154 guys are more interesting...again, to me.

WBC #2 contender Margarito vs. #3 contender Cintron 3rd fight for the WBC 154 belt that Maravilla just vacated.

WBC #1 contender JCC Jr. is ruled out since he can't probably make 154 anymore. remember he's taking diuretics?

  5. This is too funny. He said awhile back that he wouldn't consider Dzindziruk because he wasn't a name. So, instead, he might take on Zbik? And let's not pretend that there's more money @ 160 right now compared to 154. He's turning away possible fights with Cotto, Floyd, rematch with Paul Williams, and others. There is nothing to be had @ 160 right now. It's very, very disappointing.

It's the middleweight division and if he plans to stay and rule there then I don't blame him, it's his choice and he knows what weight is best for him. He doesn't need to move down for a few bigger names when he just took out the undisputed middleweight champion in a fight he wasn't supposed to win. Also to those insulting his choice of opponent because he's not popular enough, this isn't a popularity contest and I hope at least SOME people know this already. It wasn't a popularity contest either when he beat Pavlik and the majority overlooked him for that reason. Take a look at his last three fights, Pavlik, Williams and Cintron, all three are dangerous opponents, a POSSIBLY easier one next is not a crime.

Show me the article in which he ruled out Dzinziruk (who has mandatory duties with Angulo anyway). He's not turning away from Cotto etc. but they are turning absolutely away from a Maravilla fight. Floyd was interested in the 160lbs belt anyway (at a catchweight, of course) and Williams, when and if he'll be ready for the rematch, would fight at 160 without a problem. If there was a fight on the horizon at 154, Maravilla wouldn't vacate the belt. But he's forced to vacate one of the two, and the MW Championship worth more.

Of course the WBO can **** themselves for jumping the gun and stripping Maravilla for a few bucks of quick sanctioning fee (Jacobs-Pirog in July), but that's professional boxing today. They did it 3 weeks after Martinez visited the WBO HQ in Puerto Rico and they told him how proud they are to have him as their champ.

Pavlik inherited a division without much and lost a division without much.

I guess he likes the WBC belt for the same reasons everyone else does but now that he's also lineal champ he must be taking it seriously and maybe even feel compelled to stay around. It's "his" division now.

Martinez responded with "Dzinziruk who?" when Sergey called him out.

I guess that rules out a Mayweather clash at 154 at some point in the future.

I'm sure he wouldn't mind fighting any of the top fighters at 154 if the possibility was offered. It's not about belts anymore and if he wants to be the man at 160 then good for him he shouldn't stop his career waiting for a big fight to be offered.

  14. So what will you say if he fights Zbik?

Good. He's held the belt for 15 months without ever having a fight for it in his life. Laughable from the WBC.
