Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez to vacate 154lbs championship

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by BigBone, Jun 17, 2010.

  1. I don't have a problem with it as long as he's fighting noteworthy guys at that weight. A Williams rematch (which I'd like to see) @ 160 would be great. And, it's no secret that he holds the middleweight belt with very high esteem; and I don't have a problem with that. But, IMO, the better competition and money is @ 154.

Because Margarito is the #2 ranked contender. Don't worry, Ryan will get his shot against Cintron for WBC 154 title IF...

Rhodes has been active and won a WBC eliminator, Margarito imo should be nowhere near the top of those rankings.

in fact its down right ****ing scandalous that he is.

  4. It's even more of a disgrace that Chavez Jr. is #1.

Sergio doesn't need a belt, as long as he's coming off a win over Pavlik and has HBO behind him, he can make money fights with or without a belt. There's more money to be made at 154, but middleweight is more prestigous. Margaritto has already said he prefered to fight Martinez at 160, and Mayweather would fight Martinez for the 160 title than the 154 title that he already won. Not to mention the winner of the Duddy/Chavez fight would be an easy yet lucrative payday.

if that will be the case, then the martinez is off floyd's shortlist of future possible opponents..

its going to be a waste, williams will run back to 147, theres no names at 160 and the big names like floyd, pac, cotto and even mosley wont even consider to move up to fight middleweight.

I see your point but what are the chances of Martinez getting a fight with any of those names at this point? Floyd is negotiating with Pac, Mosley's status is unknown (but a fight with Berto seems like a better possibility than Martinez),Cotto has better chance of fighting Margo than Martinez. The only name is PWill who can easily fight at 160 with him.

Margarito being inactive for a year and then magically being number 2 stinks of typical WBC rank fixing, just like JCC Jr who can't fight at JrMW.It's name recognition.Same way Cotto can lose and go straight to a Jr MW title challenge(not knocking Cotto at all, just the way name recognition works in boxing)

Cotto fighting for the title was nothing like the same, that was a voluntary defence by Foreman.

Voluntary, but not mandatory. He wasn't ranked in the WBA as he'd never fought at JrMW. I may have slightly misspoken but my basic point is more often than not, sanctioning bodies will gladly put you in at a decent spot to challenge for a title you probably shouldn't be able to if you have the right name. JCC Jr hasn't been able to make Jr MW so their number 2 guy magically will get the bump when that's set in stone that he won't be able to fight for it. The problem i have with that is why in the hell is margarito number 2 after his suspension?

Also,JCC Jr and Duddy will be fighting for a WBC Silver MW belt. So why did Maravilla have to make a choice in which weight belt he would keep but JCC jr can fight for an interim MW and still be ranked number 1?

Chavez Jr. #1?, that is some ******ed list even if its official. How can you have a proven cheater suspended as #1, above all, what has this cheating trash done?. All he did was pad his record with cabdrivers like his father did, only difference is he needs controversy and cheating against cabdrivers, his father needed it when he stepped up after 83 wins over kindergarten drop-outs.

Williams must want no part of a rematch if he's demanding to fight at 147.

    Sucks.
