Top level pro matches are fought over 12 rounds and you only need to win more than half to them to prevail on the cards, but some fighters instead of starting strong and fading to the end, actually look so-so early before turning on the heat. Since it's less common, these fighters more often get criticized for early struggles than others for late, yet it's an actual approach not only used by Martinez, but pressure fighters like Margarito and adaptive boxer(punchers) like JMM or Hopkins.

What other "Benjamin Button" type of boxers can you name, who start sluggish and fishish fresh as a daisy?

Erik Morales would always start slow for the most part, and finished strong.

Ali would toy with lesser opponents and come on late and, usually, finish the show. Ray Robinson did that a few times as well, not look like magic, but then come on. Some current guys, Saul did that against Alfonso Gomez. Bute, sort of did that against Brian Magee if I remember correctly. Miguel Garcia seems to be one of those fighters that's going to start slow, and eventually really pick it up. He's done that a few times already, including his fight with Concepcion.

I feel like you have two types of these fighters

Better Conditioned Fighters: Rocky Marciano, Anthony Margarito, Joe Calzaghe, Sergio, Manny Pacquiao

These fighters have more in the tank, It isn't so much that they start doing stuff so much different after a certain point; but they just truly appear to be considerably less tired then other people very late rounds.. still coming just as hard as round one.

Rhythm Catchers: Floyd Mayweather Jr; JMM; Joe Frazier.. I can't think of anymore because I just woke up.

These guys basically start timing the other person, they get into their rhythm, they get inside the other persons Rhythm and start timing them. This allows them as the fight goes on to start catching the other person more and more... Some people have serious issue changing their internal timing...

Both Martinez and Calzaghe have underrated adaptive abilities, think about the change-up in the Pavlik fight or any recent Sergio outing, where Joe managed to pick apart not only the likes of Kessler, but the crazy good southpaw weapons of Hopkins who's success rate dropped rapidly from R4.

But as you said, there are two types, the pressure/physically able, and those who let's say grow strong mentally.

I actually consider both Martinez and Calzaghe to be very similar in how they fight and how they go about using what they have. Agree with you that they do adapt very well.. of course there are hybrids of the two.. but they are very good examples for the better conditioning.. more so then the later

JMMarquez is good at surging mid/late.

Martinez has great stamina from his days of being a long distance cyclist before he took up boxing.

People criticise his stamina as he seems to fade in the middle rounds but you know he's going to be the freshest man come the 10th, 11th and 12th.

But Margarito doesn't do so out of choice but style. Pressure fighters generally need to turn the heat up, and can't just jump out of the gate's blazing. Think Frazier, Marciano, etc.

Does Marquez necessarily always finish like a champ? The only criticism you could find his way in the Pac-Marquez III fight was that he put the brakes on toward the end (Yes, he obviously still won, though).

    Sergio had it all planned.

He always knows when to turn it on and sex the other guy's face off.
