atsch Montiel? lol. Martinez is easily the fighter of the year. In his last 2 fights he was the underdog in which vs Pavlik many thought Martinez will be destroyed or be put on a stretcher ("Cough" Booradley lol) but instead Martinez bust up Pavlik. Martinez was the underdog in the Williams fight but Martinez not only beat Williams but ko Williams in which Williams was old cold very badly. <<<<Has Montiel ever come close to the way Martinez did in 2010?
If you analyze his year a little deeper, I don't know if it merits FOTY.. Pavlik had only gotten out of rehab about a month prior to the fight... he hadn't trained and had to drain himself... according to reports at least. He did weigh like 180 on fight night, rehydrating 20 lbs was not a common thing for him. Also it wasn't like Pavlik had been very impressive over any of his fights in the prior 2 years. I was never even that big on Paul Williams ... I had him losing the first fight to Martinez , I thought Williams was losing to Cintron before that ******ed finish by Cintron.... Paul Williams really isn't a MW... he is just a abnormally tall Welterweight who had to fight in the JMW and MW division because no guys at 147 would risk fighting someone like that. So Although I am a Martinez fan, and impressed with his year... I don't know if his two wins merit him being Fighter of the Year Personally.... I probably would give the Edge to JuanMa .... 2 impressive victories and 1 very impressive victory over a top p4p guy. TKO Luevano 7 TKo Concepcion 2 RTD Marquez 8 EDIT -- If I did have a vote , it would be hard to go against Martinez... but some of you act as if no one else had even close to as good a year as Martinez... which is just wrong.
Pavlik got out of rehab 10 days before the Marintez fight, not one month, and at that point weighed 180 pounds, and continued to drink. There are about 10 different "fighter of the year" awards. Ring, AP, Boxing Writers Association, et. Martinez was bound to win one of two of them.
10 days? ****... thats even worse. So Martinez basically beat a drunk and a welterweight , Fighter of the year?
The most telling point of the Pavlik/Martinez fight is that under those conditions Pavlik was winning the fight at the end of 8 rounds. I would not say Martinez just got lucky, but he WAS simply the man who happened to be in the right place at the right time, and capatilized on the opportunity.
Montiel's had a great year man, he scored 4 knockouts including going to Japan and stopping Hasegawa in the 4th round and stopping Concepcion in the 3rd. Obviously what Martinez has done has been phenomenal, he put on a masterclass against Pavlik when many expected him to lose and he viciously KO'd Williams in another fight many expected him to lose. Martinez is the favourite for the award and rightfully so, I just think that there's a case to be made for Montiel also
