This is a fact, you can't refute this. Martinez's MW reign is a joke. The idea that some people refer to Martinez as an ATG is a joke. Martinez has been ducking and dodging real competition for YEARS now, fighting hand-picked no-hopers instead. Sergio really likes them plodder types. This character ducked Pirog to fight Dzinziruk instead - that really tells you what you need to know about Martinez's title reign right there.

Make no mistake, Martinez is responsible for the current duckathon in the MW division, he set the tone for it. He could have fought everyone by now, if he wanted to - instead we get Dzinziruk, Barker, Macklin, Murray.

The Cotto fight is an absolute disgrace and an insult to the sport and the fans. One of the worst matchups in recent memory. It would be that even if Martinez hadn't spent the last several years ducking and dodging real competition, but since he has, it's even worse. You hear some gibberish about Martinez wanting a payday. The WBC shouldn't sanction it. It shouldn't allow the title to be on the line. In fact, it should strip Martinez if he goes through with the fight.

Anyone who paid the least bit of attention at the time knew that Dzinziruk was forced on Martinez due to HBO owing Shaw a fight as a condition of making Bradley-Alexander. Aside from that, both Sturm and Quillin have turned down offers from Martinez. That leaves Pirog, who's essentially done at this point and Golovkin, who couldn't even fight in the States until 2012 and held the junior version of the WBA belt for most of that period. Likewise, both of those guys would take a fight with Cotto over a fight with Martinez in a minute, so I fail to see how it's a valid criticism for Martinez himself to do the same.

Kelly Pavlik - WBO/WBC Middleweight Champion
Paul Williams 2x - Former Welterweight Champion (Very tall for the weight)
Mathew Macklin - Robbed in Germany vs Sturm for WBA belt
Julio Cesar Chavez - WBC Middleweight Champion
Martin Murray - Robbed in German vs Sturm for WBA belt

    Side fights :
Dzinziruk - WBO Junior Middleweight champion
    Kermit Cintron (Controversial Draw)
Alex Bunema - WBC Interim Light Middleweight

Honestly Sergio Martinez was overlooked for a long time since fighting at 147 against Margarito and managed to work his way back the hard way despite being robbed in the Cintron/Williams fights and was only stripped due to Politics more than the quality of opposition (Martinez winning back his belt from Julio Cesar Chavez after a lot of chasing)

Sergio is on his way out and who can blame him at 38, Injuries are starting to take its toll

Miguel Cotto is a 3 weight world champion (140/147/154) with losses to Pacquiao/Mayweather and Austin Trout along with the defeat to Margarito which he later avenged . . . . Cotto has no business at 160 but Martinez is coming off a long layoff and injury so obviously is taking a safe bout against a guy who will give him a big payday

So long as his next fight is against GGG then who really cares? same with GGG, he should fight Erislandy Lara who just called him out and to be honest thats a fight that interests me far more than Quillin/Geale/Sturm/Murray

    Golovkin Vs Lara - April
    Martinez Vs Cotto - June/July

    Golovkin Vs Martinez - November/December WBA/WBC Unificationn

I am not too interested in the Cotto fight as Sergio has grown into a MW and Cotto is going up in weight again and has not had the best run of late.
I think Martinez MW reign could be a bit underated when you consider that he had to come up in weight initially, beat big punching Pavlik, who had never been beaten at the weight, beat Williams, beat undefeated future champ Barker, beat undefeated Murray, beat undefeated MW champ Chavez, beat undefeated Dzinziruk, Macklin.
Was Pirog pushing for a match up with Martinez? After winning the title he didnt fight as tough a comp as Martinez in my opinion.

who do you feel Martinez ducked, give names
Why do you think he ducked Pirog when you look at who each fought?

After beating the alcoholic, Martinez decided that he wasn't taking any stylistically difficult matchups unless he had absolutely no choice in the matter, it's as simple as that. No power punchers, no movers, no slicksters, none of that. Martinez KO'd Darren Barker with a glancing shot to his guard. Barker went down like he was shot. I don't see how anyone in their right mind can defend that fight. As for Quillin, what the hell did he do to get an offer from Martinez that neither Pirog nor Golovkin got? I mean, other than being a limited plodder...

Martinez is a good fighter, but vastly overrated on this forum. I expect little, past prime, glass-hearted Cotto to give him all he can handle and then some.

I would expect prime Martinez to blitz any version of Cotto with ease. It would be like Cotto-Pacquiao, except more brutal and thus shorter. In this situation though, I find myself hoping that Cotto somehow pulls it off because Martinez is a veritable cancer in the MW division at this point with his ducking and dodging.

I meant it ironically. Since you've been around since 2009, you must have read the dozens of threads on here post Cotto-Margarito I and Cotto-Pac about how Cotto is glass hearted, took a knee, etc.

Personally, I don't have any questions about his heart. I also don't think he is past prime, or at least not so much that it will be a factor with Martinez.

Sergio is a credit to the sport I feel honored to have witness his amazing career. I dont care if he is an ATG or not at MW he has earned a money fight with Cotto before he'll be forced into a fight with Golovkin. And I think that prime Sergio would've been a night mare match up for GGG. Now GGG takes it by midway KO.
