Some people are of the opinion that all Golovkin has on Martinez is power. Of all his stoppage wins and knockouts, how many of them was Golovkin behind on points at the time it finished. Yeah, exactly....

Martinez is one tough hombre. No one can deny the fact he takes on any and all challengers. He was the only person crazy enough to fight Paul Wiliams twice during his prime when the Punisher was probably the most avoided man in boxing.

Kudos to Sergio, but it's definitely in his best interest to take a tune up fight after such a long layoff. He's not Floyd Mayweather, especially when you factor in his layoff is due to an injury. He should get 1 or 2 fights under his belt, see how he performs in those fights, and than meet up with GGG in the fall/winter of next year.

If he'd beat Jr in rematch that would give him a big boost of confidence and besides that, him vs 3G would be huge in terms of PPV but he has to get past of Jr first.

With his age, injuries and all that bad stuff we don't know how much Sergio got in his tank.

Won't disagree with you that the counter is a **** way of scoring a fight, nor that some clean strikes from either fighter may not have been called.
(difficult to tell tho' when the footage is so crap)

    Cumulative round scoring:

    Rnd 1 1:1
    Rnd 2 4:11
Rnd 3 13:20 (this was the one were Bute really looked busy)
Rnd 4 20:33 at time of stoppage

I'm gonna reveal some of my latent OCD here, but if you watch repeatedly (and can stand the footage quality) a lot of Butes are blocked, slipped or ducked, whereas Gennady shows great accuracy, picking his punches far better - itself an unusual attribute in the ams where volume tends to score well.

What's clear tho, despite first appearances was that Golovkin was in absolute command of the fight, even if you were to give some extra to Bute.

Golovkin was undoubtedly a master of the amateur sport, but what happens when you move up to the pros? The talent can be there, but some guys make it, others don't.

For me, Golovkins power is of course a special factor, but in the Pro game it's his complete command of both the ring and the tempo of every fight that he's in which shines out to me. I've never once seen him flustered or uncertain; - a fighter utterly at home in his chosen environment. (Go have some fun, Gennady!)

Course, it's boxing, and everyone sees something different in every fighter and every fight. ESB would be a boring place otherwise.:bbb

    what?

the last time Sergio fought jr he ended up in the hospital with stitches in his mouth, eye and head along with surgery after he tore his knee.

its either a chavez rematch or ggg in which Martinez will take the later as he already beat the former.

this is all about money along with risk/reward for Sergio at this point.

there is very little reward for Sergio in a jr rematch and a whole lotta risk.

    :patsch :huh :think :-(

I am a big Martinez fan but no way in hell will HBO ever make Martinez vs GGG as a PPV! It will never sell, plain and simple. Neither of them have a big fan base as like for example Chavez Jr. has. It will though have big ratings when in fact they do have Martinez vs GGG on their regular HBO boxing.

Unless Golovkin or Martinez loses first I think this fight happens next year, a lot depends what other fights Martinez can get. If Martinez gets a fight with Cotto, Mayweather-Alvarez winner, or a Chavez rematch he'll take that if not I think HBO puts enough money and pressure on him to take on Golovkin.

HBO is getting behind Golovkin and would probably love to see him be the one to take the 160 crown from Martinez.

If they do fight next year I think Golovkin has to be the favorite but Martinez would be a very live underdog. Martinez looked vulnerable in his last fight. If he's back healthy he's still a top fighter and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him beat Golovkin but at this point in his career Golovkin probably beats him.

Did'nt even know the fight lasted 4 rounds.
I previously watched a partial version of the fight when I looked it up inputing Golovkin vs Bute.
When it read your post just now stating it went 4 rounds I searched it up again but this time inputed Bute's name first and was able to find the whole fight. All 4 rounds.

The video quality is grainy no doubt. Its hard to tell if Golovkin's shots are really landing as he's sneaking them in there under Bute's wider, longer shots.
Had'nt seen the 3rd round and I see now the fight was paused to give Golovkin a standking 8.
I hate that about amatuer fights, you get clocked a good shot and the fight is immediately paused for a standing 8 and it has no effect on the scoring as the scoring is based strictly on connects and not the force behind them.

Golovkin keeps his cool, no doubt a trait very helpful in the pros. He's got the makings of a good fighter, I just have'nt seen enough of him to be sold one way or the other.

I'd like to see him against someone thats sharp and can move.

Does'nt seem like a big body though to move up to 168 lbs.
Definitely would love to see him against Chavez Jr. if a Martinez fight is'nt available.
Unfortunately for Golovkin, that may have to be at 168 lbs as Jr. it looks like can no longer make 160 lbs.

Beating a bigger body like Chavez Jr. at 168 lbs would surely impress me.
    Beating Ward even better.

Hey, if 168 lbs is to much for Golovkin to make, if Canelo beats Mayweather Jr. this fall, a Canelo fight for Golovkin next fall becomes huge.
    Would love to see that.

Martinez is a tough son of a ***** and I won't be surprised if he steps in the ring with GGG despite his below average performance against Martin Murray.

Well Sergio was avoided, robbed and stripped on more than one occasion so for him to avoid Golovkin would be a tad hypocritical

Still would like to see him fight a tune up before Golovkin

Gennady Vs Martin Murray and Julio Cesar Chavez / Peter Quillin
Sergio Martinez Vs Marco Antonio Rubio / Felix Sturm

The WBC is putting together a four man tournament for an interm title and DiBella says Sergio will be back in June for what it looks like to fight that winner, unless he could lure Alvarez/Mayweather or maybe even Cotto. After that, we could see Golovkin-Martinez in the winter.

What? Chavez is an exponentially bigger name than Golovkin. If there's little reward in that fight for Martinez there's a negative reward in even beating Golovkin. The idea that a Golovkin fight somehow trumps Chavez in terms of risk/reward is purely asinine.

Exactly! In fighting Jr. he'd be going into the ring against a fighter he beat pretty handily last time, and getting paid more to do it.

Is'nt going to happen at 160 lbs though, and that might enter as a factor whether Martinez prefers to fight Chavez or Golovkin.
