I'm thankful there's that one gent I don't ever have to exaggerate about...

Hint: He's in this picture and he's not Tyson

    Spot on.

Why should Martinez be favourite over a guy that ran the likes of Joey Archer (a superior boxer to Martinez) and Joey Giardello right down to the wire? He also beat George Benton, another cutie who I think is no lesser fighter than Martinez.

I wouldn't be surprised if Carter sparked Martinez out like he sparked Griffith out one bit.

Martinez is there to be hit if you have some level of competency, and Carter definitely has that.

Giardello soundly beat Carter on my scorecard. Cries of Carter deserving the decision are not just at all in my opinion.

A very weak argument can be made for him in the Giardello fight. If the decision goes to the man who was clearly outboxed then Carter won hands down.

Care to post your scorecard? I'd like to see where we differ.

    Here's mine:

Rubin Carter vs. Joey Giardello: 144-143 Carter
    Giardello: 2,7,8,12,13 and 15.
    Carter: 3,4,6,9,10,11 and 14.
    Rounds 1 and 5 even.

Same is true for Carter. They are on the same level and I think stylewise Martinez is at an advantage.

YOu are right ... putting aside the terrible Hollywood movie , most of those who watched the fight post "Hurricane" release that I spoke to said Rubin did win a close fight ...

Based on which Carter fights does Martinez look to have a styles advantage?

I remember either him or 1 of his team used to post on the Brit boxrec forum and was saying he should be Hatton's new trainer. He'd probably have been much better suited to the job than FMS

I disagree. Based on the fact that FMS is the greatest trainer of all time. Not this time, that time or the other time but of ALL TIME. He's the best. East and West. Of the whole town, he's the toast. Ten times as good as Freddie the dope joke coach choke Roach.

I think Carter proved himself against superior competition than Martinez has, and I don't think that's debateable in the slightest. Personally, I find him much more impressive on film as it is. And where does this styles advantage talk in favor of Martinez come from?

Most contemporary accounts of the fight...those that actually saw the fight in the round, so to speak, have Giardello outsmarting and outpointing Carter. Some of that ol' magic from the third Tiger fight, when Joey won the crown was there for him vs Carter.

Ha...He would say that he knows a helluva lot more about Carter than any of us do...(and he would be right!)
The Carter that beat Benton would beat Martinez...you don't fight with your hands down against a Carter. In the span of time from the Fernandez, Griffith, and Benton fights, Carter was fierce.
