Had Forrest not been killed, how would the version who showed up to beat down Sergio Mora done against the Martinez who won fighter of the year in 2010? Forrest would have been the best technician Martinez ever faced and we saw the trouble he had with Barker's straight precise punching. Then again, Forrest was slowing down and never had the movement or spring in his step that Martinez has.
Sergio would have beat Martinez...In order to beat Martinez you need to impose yourself on him and bully him, and even then you might get KTFO.
I thought you meant prime Forrest (the one who beat Mosley....assuming this fantasy matchup would be held at 154lbs.) who I still have losing to Martinez..... thought it's close.... if you meant the Forrest who beat Mora... I got Martinez KO'ing him. He was slow but yes he was a good technician. But Sergie Dzindiruk was a good technician too, not as good, but still good though
Forrest and I don't think it's even close. Other than going life and death [with a guy who has swiss chesse for defense] in first Williams fight and decisioning a weight drained alcoholic Kelly Pavlik - who has Martinez really beaten?
I doubt it. Although slower, I would have favored the Forrest that beat Mora over Martinez. Too good of a boxer/mover, to precise of a puncher, used a decent jab, had a good right hand and uppercut, and also decent hooks. Forrest didn't have a problem dealing with slickness. Recall Mora is the same guy that Mosely couldn't lay a hand on. Forrest would have been the first guy Martinez fought who had enough talent and boxing ability on offense to give Martinez real issues. Not to mention Forrest was a harder puncher than Paul Williams. Martinez would have the advantage in the speed department, but so did Mora, and Forrest had little problem Mora in their rematch. I recall at the time that he wasn't really interested in Williams or Martinez as they weren't money fights. Too bad Forrest's life was ended prematurely, because I think he would have definitely fought either guy once they raised their profiles.
The same could be said about Martinez, except, he doesn't have a Shane Mosely on his resume. Just over rated blown up welters and junior middleweights.
This is a great match up. I got love and respect for Forrest he was a part of the Oscar, Mosley, Tito, Vargas, and Winky era which was a very good one, but I think many would call borderline great. I think both Williams and Pavlik fall abit short on the greatness scale, but if Williams didn't get kod by Sergio nobody else was going to do it. Despite having a less than decent defense no one had dropped Williams and had a no bs approach to boxing. He humiliated a comebacking Winky and outworked Margarito when no one wanted to fight him. I think the only version that makes it close fight is a prime Forrest. Sergio in his most important fights wins in spectacular fashion. Forrest such a well rounded fighter, but if he couldn't hurt you I never liked how it would affect.mentally and he would throw less. As if he didn't trust his skills enough. Clear in the second Mayo fight.
