tough call...not sure how much the size difference would play into it. i'll say martinez can use his movement to box to a boring decision. if you can move, and you're active, you can take clottey.
At 154 I'd take Martinez but I'm not sure.Would have to look into it. Clottey IMO could be a contender at 154 too.
I actually don't find Martinez all that boring myself, but I'm a bit more patient when it comes to pure boxing than most. He's always going to be one of those guys who's going to be dependent on the style of his opponent in terms of excitement. Stylistically, based on how Clottey performed in the Cotto fight, I can see this actually being quite a thriller.
I like Sergio. Hope he gets something big soon. That fight with Cintron was ridiculous. Sergio rolled him up and got robbed for the KO and then the decision.
oh to be sure i like martinez and find his fights (even the kermit debacle) entertaining. i just don't see martinez willing to stand with clottey and joshua's style is typically counter punching. i think sergio would go the safe route and avoid any exchanges, not go for the knockout and work off of clottey's weaknesses in mobility and work rate
I'm not a big fan of either guy, but it does sound like a good fight. Great addition to Pavlik/Williams if it happens.
Same thing I was thinking, he should call out fighters who are active within his division if he really wants to get taken seriously, even if Clottey is a big welterweight.
Yeah, Clottey counterpunches (selectively - in that respect he could stand to improve as he gives up way too many counter opportunities measuring a guy from behind his turtle shell...sort of like David Ortiz watching three strikes whistle by when he could easily crush any one of them out of the park) while primarily moving backward - when the other guy initiates (ie Margarito). He settled into the stalker role against more of a boxer in Cotto. Of course he paid for it in the very first moments of the fight when Cotto caught him coming in, but he wasn't discouraged and continued the press the action. He's got a weird style, kind of a "counter pressure" style - similar to Jack Mosley's "powerboxing" but more grounded in a reliable jab and boxing fundamentals. Actually the same style employed to great effect last week by the other African "Grandmaster", Simphiwe Nongqayi in his destruction of the sputtering Arce. :good He will come after Martinez, and Martinez will dip and bend and find all sorts of angles to land trying to figure out Clottey's guard. Martinez is a guy who likes to be accurate (which I think is also Clottey's problem, why he hesitates and gives up so many counter opportunities). While he's trying to pick his spots, Clottey will be on him like flies on **** forcing him to exchange or run...and you can't run all night from Clottey. He's just too persistent. Even if he's not hitting you, you'll be looking at his forearms two inches from your face all night.
Who's left to fight at 154 that'll sell tickets? It's a lame division. I think Martinez called out Williams and Pavlik too, so he's not cherry-picking.
A Southpaw with extreme workrate Vs. Clottey = Guaranteed Headbutt stoppage (On cuts) That said, why not SM isn't getting any younger someone throw dude a bone.
Martinez v Dazinziruk unificaton would be a fight for the purists. I'm a big Clottey fan but I'd take Martinez by boxing on the outside and running.
