An almost 40 year old boxer that relies on an athletic style to win fights, fighting legitimate, prime contenders (who could very well go on to win a title someday). Nothing more. Hes been on the decline for awhile too... this didn't happen over night. That such a past it Martinez was able to have such a fight with Murray, and be the one that won the 12th round, is actually a credit to Sergio, imo.
Middleweight is not a safe division for someone in Martinez's position at the moment. Rife with injuries, layoffs, and fading as a fighter, its passing of the torch time and the old lion king is being surrounded and eyed by his younger, worthy challengers. Imo its the natural progress of boxing and its simply the end to Martinez's time. That hes willing to fight G when he comes back and defend his crown (or pass the torch trying as is most likely) completes the 'circle of life' that is boxing.
Martinez was injured when he fought Murray, but even that is an indication that his body can no longer take the strain. He's ripe for the picking at this point. He had his time. He should bow out before he gets KTFO.
I really hope martinez retires. He has had a good run but at this point inthink alot of fighters can take him at this point and 160 has some dangerous names in the division... Rest easy maravilla
