Is his professional record a bit deceiving? I'll give it to him. He is a great fighter and beat the sleeves off P. Williams recently and beat the bricks off Pavlik, and lost a decision that could've gone either way to PW. But, after looking at his history of total fights, he's fought a ton of guys with awful records even nearing his 35th to 40th pro fight. Martinez has never been the bad guy and so I've never heard anything negative about the guy. But many trash Money, Manny, and others for supposedly fighting less than the best. Most people fight no names until their 20th or so fight.
You forgot that he got destroyed by Margarito early in his career and that he started boxing when he was in his 20's and was learning on the job-- and he sure learned well!!! Furthermore, I think considering he is a slick unorthodox south paw most names avoided him so its fair to say that he was not a protected prospect coming up.
I have him as my #3 P4P, but I'd like Martinez lovers to list off his 5 best wins. And no, the first Williams fight doesn't count (throw out the ridiculous scorecard and Martinez still loses) and despite the robbery, Cintron either. 1. Williams II 2. Pavlik 3. ? 4. ? 5. ?
3 Bunema, 4 Roman. No idea about 5. Although he should definitely have the Cintron win amongst those obviously and possibly Williams I. It's hard to give him **** about his previous record when nobody knew who he was. So it's not like anything was expected of him, and he had no amateur experience or very little and was learning on the job. I don't think anybody has complained about Manny's early career opponents because he was largely doing the same thing. And Mosley? When have people ever complained about Mosley fighting anybody but the best? He's taken on Wright, Forrest and De La Hoya twice for God's sake, amongst Mayweather, now Pacquiao, Vargas etc.
you gotta consider that the guy has done well against guys who come straight at him but has yet to beat a opponent who likes to use his brain a little. Not saying he can't, but let's see him do it. His win over Pavlik and his KO over Williams definitely impressed me.
Bunema backed off him a fair bit from what I remember. He looked pretty decent in that bout fighting largely off the front foot.
this is why i would have enjoyed martinez-dzinziruk or martinez-cotto personally i'd like to see him fight anyone who can box of the backfoot well
Sorry I meant to say not just anyone who boxes on the backfoot, rather someone who picks his shots. Tries to see the openings before throwing his punches.
They can fight off the back-foot well enough, but they are both largely come-forward front-foot fighters. I don't see Martinez being the aggressor in either of those. That doesn't mean I wouldn't like to see both/either though. :smile
Why is there **** all people giving him credit for Cintron. Cintron is a top boxer and his victory over him is only marginally inferior to Pavlik and Williams.
the past is the past, the present is the present. what matters is, that he had a lot of wins back than and boxing margarito and cintron isnt that bad either. now he is kicking ass, thats what matters.
