Injuries, father time and little time spent in the gym. He did more physical rehab than boxing training.
Not trying to bring heiland into the same sentence as Maravilla but both argentines went into big fights with obvious leg injuries lol. Cotto is such a diva remember Martinez wanted to wear a brace and Cotto demanded he couldn't lol
To me, Sergio Martinez was perhaps the greatest Middleweight Champ even though I don't believe he was near the boxing equal of Robinson, LaMotta, Monzon, Hagler, Hopkins, Golovkin, etc... Sergio was a great ambassaduer for the sport (very likeable) and a guy whose style was always - ALWAYS - entertaining. Sergio convinced me that being a great Champion was more than just beating the opposition.
Not even close. Martinez ducked Pirog, on camera. Not sure why he gets a pass for such cowardly behavior. Talking about it wasn't a money fight, yet he fought the Barker's, Macklin's and Dzinziruk's, for the same money he would have got to fight Pirog. I don't respect titlists like him.
He didn't. He just got exposed by cherry pick gone wrong HOF fighter Miguel Cotto. The excuses of his fans never seem to end.
I call BS. Cotto tee'd off on him for 9 rounds and still couldn't keep him down. I remember Sergio landing some pretty good shots towards the end of the fight that were shaking Cotto. Sergios knees were just gone. I'm a bigger Cotto fan than Martinez, but come on, there's a reason Cotto and his team wanted him. Everytime he was shown on 24/7, he was on the exercise bike. Barely peddling.
Darren Barker as well. I think that was poor from Barker because he has a lot of fans travel to see him fight. He knew he wasn't gonna last long but couldn't miss out on the final payday.
I recall him landing a couple good straight lefts to the body before the middle rounds, but nothing that actually shook Cotto. Cotto destroyed him and didn't take much damage in return at all.
