Judging Sergio Martinez's skills as the pound for pound top three/ or two in the sport, a question came into my head. If he fought 46 year old Bernard Hopkins today.. would it be a question of Martinez being too fast for Hopkins or Hopkins being too big? Martinez did beat up on a bigger Kelly Pavlik with speed... but at the same time, look what Hopkins has done to smaller fighters.. Trinidad, De La Hoya, Wright...
:think I think Bernard would win. He knows how to deal with speed. B Hop would fight him dirty as hell and Martinez wouldn't be used to it
PFP i have Martinez higher but hth i think Hopkins wins this... I agree with the poster who said Hopkins knows how to deal with superior speed.... But i do think Martinez makes it close and outhustles Hopkins in alot of rounds... Overall though Hopkins knows alot of tricks and deals with Martinez. Not to mention the natural size difference which would be the deciding factor.... Hopkins 115-113 or 114-112.. He might hurt Martinez a couple times maybe drop him but dont think he would finish him.
That's a great alternative.. but Andre Ward could be the fastest fighter above 160 after Dirrel and Dawson... so putting him would be even tougher for Martinez.. speed wise... but Hopkins probably has soooo many intangibles that make him truly a tougher opponent than Ward. But for the record, I have Ward beating Martinez.
Martinez Hopkins would not be a bad matchup at 165-170. If Martinez wants an interesting fight to help him move to the top of the p4p rankings, there's one for him if Hopkins can get past Pascal. I disagree that Hopkins has shown he can deal with speed, certainly not from two handed athletic fighters (jones Jr, calzaghe, taylor were probably the fights he looked his worst in, early in the dlh fight aswell oscar was doing ok with his speed)
Bernard would win but not with utilization of his size. He's great at neutralizing in-and-out fighters. Once BHop disrupts his rhythm, he'll be there to get countered and hit. Awesome fight though, Sergio's versatility would help him a lot. This is assuming it's a healthy BHop.
At 160 they both would weigh the same and i dont know what would happen. Im leaning on Hopkins and his skill but then again Martinez is a really crafty fighter.
BHop would mug that pretty boy. He would make it such a physical fight. Sergio would go out like a warrior though. I would pay top dollar to see it anyway.
Hopkins hasn't knocked a man out in about six years (ODLH-similarly sized to SM and at middleweight-and a body shot), so it goes to a decision almost certainly. He simply doesn't have the punch to stop world class fighters who aren't chinny. Pavlik has a good beard but Hopkins was nailing him flush with everything in the book, mashing his face, still couldn't put him down. Sergio is superior to Pascal, and wouldn't be figured out and flummoxed so easily, I don't feel. I lean toward Martinez. I think Bernard's legs are too old to fight a smart fighter with Sergio's athleticism. Pascal has the athleticism but not the stamina or ring IQ. It should make a rather large difference. BHOP is maybe the single smartest fighter today but he is still 46-years-old.
