Question: Fighting with injuries (knee, elbow, wrist), how hard is it to prepare when your body hurts for any fight? Sergioe Martinez: It is not easy to prepare for a fight when you have some of the ailments that I have when preparing for a World Championship fight. I struggle with joint pains, knee pain, and shoulder pain. Without my physical therapist, Dr. Raquel Bordons, I would not be able to train today, and probably wouldve had to retire due to my injuries. Because I train 6 days a week for an average of 8 hours a day, I am always in constant pain. There are some days when I am so sore that I cannot even walk but I push myself because I know that I have to push myself to be the best fighter in the world. I know that I have to put in more hours than your average fighter because I didnt grow up a boxer. I started very late in this sport, so that is why I have to train so many hours and put in a lot of work in order to perform at the level that is expected of me and for me to come out victorious.
Didn't you just try to correct someone else for spelling? LOL. Perhaps there is a new fighter named Sergioe that I have never heard of...
He is a bit vague about his current state of health. He appears to have been carrying these injuries for some time but we do not get a clear picture of how he feels right now today. The Cotto fight will tell us more obviously.
Adding the "e" is an old ESB meme: Cotto(e) Berto(e) Margarito(e) Never really found it particularly funny, but there you have it.
True Whiner!!! Why even bring this subject up while training for one of the biggest paydays of your career? Sounds like mentally he's trying to soften his landing!!!
I think I was reading another article and from what he was describing, it sounded like he had microfracture surgery on his knee which I know from watching professional basketball, is a difficult injury to recovery from. Obviously, boxing doesn't nearly put the strain on your knees that jumping and cutting in basketball does. But never the less, the knees still play a huge part in leverage and power and of course movement. Hopefully Martinez has recovered because he was a fun boxer to watch at his peak.
