You know this is a non-starter. Of course it'd be a great alternative, but it just isn't going to happen - neither guy is crossing the pond and Sturm likely wouldn't even touch the fight in his own backyard.
But he's without a promoter now, looking for a big fight, and my guess would be he'd get RTL Television's support, which is a lot of money. RTL broadcasted several early morning (local time) fights before, and PW-Sturm sounds like a fight HBO would be interested in. Obviously I'd live to see Dzinziruk too, but as an 'interim fight', Sturm is a better preparation for Pavlik.
Right... forgot about Sturm's promotional status. Hmm... I wouldn't blame him for being gunshy, but it is an interesting option for Sturm. HBO could even sell him as the "guy DLH couldn't beat".
beating Dzinziruk wont get him up in the ranks? it wont do anything for him? but beating Phillips, Kolle, and a shot Wright will? that doesn't make sense at all..... if he wants to be taken seriously he's gotta fight the best in the division and Dzinziruk is one of the best in the division, so if he's not fighting Pavlik or Martinez, then he def. needs to fight Sergiy
By that rationale, Kermit Cintron (another DiBella fighter, and Quintana is already on the card) might make even more sense. He fights more like Pavlik that just about any option out there, and should be able to score an early KO this weekend. Dzinziruk would be my personal top choice, but I can understand why he might not want to take on a southpaw if he's already started camp.
Williams/Sturm would be the perfect fight. Paul beats Sturm, and then let Pavlik dispose of that pesky little twerp Sergio Mora in February, so he can knock the rust off, and I can see Mora get beat up. After that bring on Pavlik/Williams in a unification fight next summer. That would be HUGE!! However, I doubt if Sturm would ever agree to fight PW.
SUPPOSEDLY, Sturm has been trying to get a big money fight with an American, and is trying to dump Universum in order to get one. When the Sturm-Pavlik negotiations fell through, he announced he would never fight for them again. Of course, now that Sturm is holding himself out to be a free agent when he really isn't contractually, anyone who tries to make a fight with Sturm would be walking into a shitstorm. No way a Sturm fight happens with anyone. Besides, Sturm got his ass kicked by Gevor in his last fight and is damn lucky to still be holding onto a belt.
I want to see him fight Dz because pretty much, i think Dz has earned it... i mean damn, hes undefeated, has beaten some decent comp, and has earned his shot as a challenger. This is the point of the sport.... hes one of the best fighters at 154, why would i not want them to fight? Williams - Martinez Williams - Dz Dz - Martinez all would do as good fights... not quite sure why someone would be AGAINST williams vs Dz that dont have an agenda...
You must be outta yo damn mind if you think a fight with Serg will get Paul more noteriety than beating any version of Winky Wright. I just don't get the whole facination with this guy. His only claim to fame is being the guy who people think might beat Paul Williams... And he can't.
Where were fans like you when paul was trying to get Cotto to fight him at 147... And what about when he was trying to get Shane to fight him?
All true, but if and when Pavlik/Williams finally happens it will be a huge fight. If PW could pick up a belt at 160 the fght would go from huge to MONSTER! Two American middleweights in their prime in a title unification fight!! Hey -- I can dream can't I:yep
I agree that Wright was a good fight for Williams no matter what... that is just part of the sport, the new champion taking the scalp of the old champion, but another part of the sport (which sadly seems to be dissapearing it seems) is taking on some of your best challenges... guys who might fly under the radar but have earned a shot. Seriously, how is someone like Dz ever going to get a decent fight if everyone has the same attitude some of you guys have.... this is part of the sport, you fight your damn challengers when theyve earned the shot. Hes undefeated, hes ranked 5th at 154, hes beaten santos, lujan and julio.... despite being a euro fighter, and is interested in fighting the best, not being another sturm and protecting his title overseas... and even left his promoter for not getting him the fights that matter instead of safe fights. the man should get a damn shot....
he has an undefeated record with 1 good win (Julio) and 1 very good win (Santos), not to mention he's a top notch technician and you become the best by beating the best in your division so of course he'd get more credit for beating Sergiy....and lets be real here if it was anyone else, would you give him alot of credit for beating WInky? i'm not saying Williams didn't look impressive, but c'mon now.......Wright hadn't fought in 2 years and he hadn't fought at 160 in 3 years
And since when did williams get this aura about him that people need to all of a sudden DESERVE or have to be big money fights to fight him? hes not at that stage yet... hes barely one year away from losing to quintana, hes not a top p4p fighter and has yet to establish any sort of legacy or status where hes earned the right to sit back and pick and choose his challengers in the way that pac and mayweather have.... god this attitude is a sickness in the sport... seriously.
Correct Kirk. It was not long ago that Paul bitched and moaned about being ducked, and now him and his team are openly ignoring a champion in his own right in Sergyi Dzinziruk.
