I think it was. And still is. The way, a 42-1 underdog, someone people thought of as a 'bum' beat the 'invincible' PRIME Tyson. Think about it, the guy's a huge underdog. His dad wanted no part of him as he quit against Tucker, he was separated from his wife, and his mom dies. Everything is against him, yet the guy just finds his inspiration. And he proceeds to give Tyson a brutal ass-whooping, I actually like Tyson, but his losses against Douglas, Holyfield and Lewis just feel right. On that night, Douglas was a MASTERFUL boxer, he really would have given most heavwweights a tough fight, and probably beat the likes of Rocky Marciano, etc. ON that night though, he just had so much heart. As Cus D'Amato said, ''Boxing is 10% physical and 90% mental''.
I agree in most of what you say was a bit like fate Imo but, He wouldn't have beaten Marciano and Tyson didn't train for that fight and was drinking pints of Vodka and partying like there was no tomorrow, a focused Tyson would have KOed him, Tyson had him down and there was the famous long count. Tyson beat himself by not respecting himself, boxing and his challenger. Saying all of the above Buster Won the title and does not get the respect he deserves.
Tyson didn't prepare properly for a lot of fights. Buster was the one who made him pay for it. Props to Bus.
Tyson was actually abysmal in this fight and if Douglas had possessed a harder punch he would have KO'd him way way earlier.
Yeah the excuses rage on, a prime Tyson was beat. The Douglas that beat Tyson, would definitely beat Marciano. It`s hard to believe as Marciano is more accomplished as a fighter, but he wouldn`t beat that version of Douglas.
Americans have a thing for a rags-to-riches story. About how some low-class, nobody ended up beating the big man in power. I think its for fairytales, and the Tyson-Douglass fight falls under that. I prefer stories steeped in reality; about how the big guy in power always wins (in the case of boxing, say Bob Arum). Anyway, Douglass went on to lose his next fight and then spiralled out of boxing. The little guy stayed the little guy.
Yes there is definitely and inspirational story there but also a rather sad tale to tell as well. The fact is Douglas was a waste of talent we rarely saw him at his best and it took him hitting rock bottom to pull out the performance of his career. You could look at this story as underdog triumphing against impossible odds or you could look at it as incredible talent throwing his career away, finally committing to his sport and triumphing only to throw it all away again against Holyfield a few months later. Also a rather sad story if you look at it from Tyson's point of view. Champion at the top, beset with personal and professional problems brought low by his poor judgement and personal strife. Bad marriage, a promoter who will steal his wealth, surrounded only by those who only want a piece if him.
