Why does it seem like so many people feel Oscar is washed up but Shane isn't? They're the same age or close to it and have had almost the same number of fights. I'm not looking up the exact specifics. Point is when Floyd beat Oscar (even though I will admit Oscar is not in his prime) all the Floyd haters made it seem like nothing but a lot of the same people think it'll be Cotto's greatest victory if he beats Shane. Somebody please explain. For the record I don't think Shane is in his prime either but neither he or Oscar is washed up. I think both of them can beat Cotto. I am not a Cotto hater or a Shane or Oscar nuthugger either. I actually like all 3 of them but Shane is my favorite of the 3.
Almost reasons people thinks that RJJ is, and Hopkins isn't. Furthermore, Mosley was countered out, but came back - Oscar needs more wins. If Mosley gets destroyed by Cotto - you will probably hear the same things here - unfortunately.
Prior to Floyd, Oscar had looked out of shape and awful against Sturm, and overmatched against Hopkins. Fair or not, wrong class or not, and even with the Mayo TKO, people view him as a declined fighter. He certainly looks declined to me in terms of footspeed and agility. Mosley, on the other hand, outfight Vargas in a tough fight, then waxed him in the rematch. And then my personal opinion is that Collazo made him look like he has more left than he really does, and for that reason I'm picking Cotto. But the perception is that he is in very good form.
Right, and that was a terrible matchup for him. I still think he's past his prime and can be worn down now in a way he couldn't be five years ago. Just a hunch, though. I'm rooting for him.
Yeah both of them are past their prime but I think a win over either one of them is a big deal. Only way I can say their washed up is if they just get destroyed by somebody by early KO or stoppage or just completely dominated for 12 rounds.
People are only saying Oscar is finished because he lost to Floyd... and they hate Floyd as much as they like Oscar. He's definitely not in his prime, but I believe he still may have a lot left. Enough to beat any B class fighters and some A class, especially if they're not on their games. The time Oscar takes off between fights lets him recuperate, and he trains hard at training camp.
Ring Magazine Extra edition October 2006, article "De La Hoya - Mayweather The Ring Answers the Vital Questions about Boxing's Biggest Fight" by William Dettloff - "...The personification of De La Hoya's Acilles heel is Mosley, whose combination of exceptional hand speed, physical strength, and endurance beat him twice. Too fast for De La Hoya to outbox, too strong for him to outpunch, and too well-conditioned to outlast. Mayweather has two of these characteristics." - I hope this quote, with due apologies/appreciation to W. Dettloff and ESB, answers the questions raised in this thread.
A prime Mosley puts Cotto's head into the third row. This version puts it in the first row, that's all.
No he didn't, his defense was pretty good but that's about it. For a good portion of the fight he just stood in the middle of the ring and did nothing. Most of his offense consisted of him pinning Mayweather against the ropes and throwing flailing arm punches that were blocked or barely landed. Not to mention he seemed to get tired and frustrated and never really untilized his jab.
Not only did he rarely land any good jabs, he rarely threw any. There was one stretch in one round where he was controlling Floyd with that jab. I have no doubt that Oscar can compete and look good against a smaller guy who will just stand in front of him and take punches. However, against Floyd he did not look good, nobody looks against Floyd. Not even Castillo looked good against Mayweather in their first fight, and that was closest anyone has ever come to beating Floyd.
