The best Margarito himself managed to cook up was that he wanted to 'get some rounds in' because of the layoff (as though he ever had a chance in hell of stopping Garcia, who not only punches harder - if 5x slower - than Margarito but has an even better chin) and to 'experiment with some things'. Like he ever had any intention of reinventing himself as some cutie-pie outside boxer.

How else do you explain Margarito doing his part to go out of his way to keep a fight on the outside (that was never his game, despite his usual height and reach advantages) with a sympathetic hometown ref pretty much calling breaks every time Garcia started going to work on the inside?

He fought a style he never used before or since, because he knew if he slugged it out in the pocket with Garcia (who is even slower than Margarito, that's his Achilles' heel, but a great deal more powerful and tougher) he would've been pounded to a pulp and stopped even faster than a semi-shot Mosley did it.
