I always have the Duran that beat up Carlos Palomino in the back of my mind too.

I agree. I think the Duran that beat DeJesus in 78, Palomino in 79 and Leonard in 80 was one of the 10 greatest fighters that ever lived and don't think there's anything particularly controversial in saying that.

Well he could well beat Mayweather easily, it's not beyond total possibility.

No fighters being favored over Mayweather previously has nothing to do with whether Duran would be favored. We are talking a guy that routinely makes most top 10 P4P lists and is considered by most to be a top 3 lightweight whom many put number 1.

Who did Mayweather fight with such credentials? Or even close.

Duran sits in almost all reputable top 10 ATG lists and reasonably often makes top 5. Will Mayweather be seen in this light?

Well luckily he tops most reputable lists (by people that have a clue) of those living.

How in the world is Duran overrated?

He defeated 3 ATGs under 135....Buchanan Dejesus and Marcel

He cleaned out the entire lightweight division in the 70s

He recorded arguably the single greatest win in boxing history over a prime sugar ray Leonard up 2 weight classes.

He dominated world champions like palomino mamby kobayashi ishimatsu cuevas and Moore

Up 4 weight classes and in his 30s, he came close to defeating a prime Marvin Hagler

At age 37, he won the middleweight title over Iran Barkley, fresh off a knockout over Hearns

You can laugh all you want but it's a fact Duran came very close to defeating Marvin Hagler.
    • After 13 rounds, Duran was ahead by one point on two scorecards and even on the third. If Duran won just 1 of the last 2 rounds, he wins the fight.
That alone makes my point valid

Ted Kid Lewis had more bouts in 1 year than Mayweather had pro fights, that doesn't mean Ted have to be favored over Floyd.

I don't think Duran is at all a lock for the top 10 especially given all the great fighters since him like Julio Cesar Chavez, Pernell Whittaker, Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Roy Jones Jr, etc. You could perhaps make a case for him in the top 10 but I'm not sure how strong the case is. Roy Jones for example wasn't bettered until he was 35 years old whereas Duran had suffered numerous losses by that age.

That’s a poor response to a solid post by SQ.

Who did Mayweather beat in those fights? an old worn out Pacman 20 pounds over his best weight?

It’s honestly gotten to the point on this forum where I’m ashamed to participate when I see threads like “Duran is overrated” and then we got other threads with posters claiming Primo Carnera was underrated. I’m disgusted. Am I missing something on film when I look at both fighters?
