Boxing: . the sport or practice of fighting with the fists, especially with padded gloves in a roped square ring according to prescribed rules

Boxing is combat. It's prize fighting.

Above all professional boxing is entertainment, that's why we pay to watch it.

I appreciate the skills as much as the next guy, the more skills the better, but if they can't use their skill set to put on an entertaining fight, then It just doesn't move me.

I don't want to see a guy on the back foot all night, avoiding exchanges, sliding around the ropes looking like he's terrified of getting caught.

Defence is only part of the game.

To name two of my all time favourites, Duran and Chavez, they both had superb defence in their prime; very difficult to hit clean, but they were also very aggressive boxers who were always looking to take their opponent down and they knew how to put on a great fight. Guys like that were the complete package.

Guys like Mayweather, on the other hand, have never been in a great fight. They've never given us anything like a fight of the year or even a round of the year.

Agreed OP, people forget what it truly is. Their preference isn't the "end all, be all".
