Setanta "Needs £100m-150m"

According to media analyst Matthew Horsman, sports broadcasting group Setanta need to get a cash injection of between £100 million to £150 million to keep going. These funds would come from an additional input by existing shareholders like Doughty Hanson, etc.

It appears the group got into the current difficult situation by trying to expand too quickly but the shareholders might be reluctant to invest extra money in Setanta now that its prospects have diminished because of the loss of the main draw of 23 Premiership matches. That unfortunate situation, might, for instance, mean them having to withdraw from the expensive Freeview/digital terrestrial platform as part of a series of cost cutting measures.

More on the story can be heard on iPlayer at the BBC Media Show's website here:

Didn't realise things were that bad. Sell their golf and cricket rights to sky...I couldn't give a **** if they were on setanta.

Although I suspect prices will be increased by £1-£2 a month.

Pretty sure Golf and Cricket attract most of the viewers tbh

Question. why is Bunces show on 2pm on a Thursday but UFC gets its own hour on a Tuesday night at 7?

yeh the show being live is a huge part of the sussess. we can ask questions live via email.

i reckon the GBP - USD exchange rate has casued setanta allot of problems.

If there deal with Top Rank last year was for 2million dollars, in 2008 it would cost them around £1mil, not it will be around £1.7mil. when you think of the amount of US sport they show like Golf and all the stuff on NASN????

  8. Maybe you people who don't work for a living.

Who the **** watches live at 2pm?

He only reads out about 3 emails a week anyway.

    Nah, you've misunderstood that dude.

sky has got the Monday Night Football games back. Basically, there are 6 packages. The first four were won easily by Sky as expected. Packages 5 and 6 were dealt with separately but only ONE of those packages has to be brought by somebody other than sky. Hence sky won package 5, and setanta package 6.

At the moment, sky have 4 packages to setanta's 2, but when the new TV deal starts, sky will have 5 to setanta's 1

Premiership football on terrestrial TV again, that would be great! The best part about it is that it may force SKY to lower their prices, as people aren't going to pay huge amounts if they can get some of it for free.

As much as I whinge about Setanta on freeview at times, I wouldn't like to see them disappear. Generally they have been very good for the sport coverage on British TV (especially if you're not with SKY).

it says that other companies could buy up Setanta rights packages on the cheap, meaning the top rank and universum deals could be bought by other channels or parties.

But who'd want to buy those? None of the other broadcasters are interested in boxing.

They'll have to cut Buncey's salary down to 500k.
