Hart's head being made the target.
Johnson drew his head aside to avoid

Sorry about the quality!

Round 12-Hart rushed and, they came
to a clinch. Johnson was there with a
straight left and they grappled and
pressed back to tho ropes. They were
out of one clinch and into another, and
between aUnohee Ilflrt'B i&ce was batto,
reached Johnson's head
with left, but it seemed to do little
damage. Hart drew away from right
and then landed several lefts and right
in succession, Hart gave an exhibition
of gameness. He kept rushing and
swinging. The last blow of the round
was a, right-hander from Hart, which
landed on Johnson's jaw.
Round 13-aohnBon wan looking serl-
ous probably at the thought of the
way Hart assimilated punishment.
There was a deal of clinching and
scuffling and Johnson In every breakaway
maiuifiod to shoot right uppercuts
in on Hart's chin. Hart did not clinch.
He was continually trying to free an
arm and get a punch, while they were
grappling. Johnson set'himself repeatedly
and drove hard blows. But Hart
did not stagger or fall.
Round 14—Johnson pressed Hart to
the ropes, but did not laud squarely.
Hart swung over to Johnson's jaw.
Johnson came back with a couple of
straight lefts. Hart swung left on fa'ce
and followed with right. Then Johnson sent
in lefts on mouth and nose. Hart
was the aggressor. Ho rapped the face
again with his right. Johnson was
slower in this round than in the preceding
ones.
Round 16—Hart rushed across the ring
and Johnson dodged away. Hart charged
him and carried him to the ropes. Then
Johnson cut loose with some stiff lefts
and painted Hart's face a fresh crimson
color. Johnson kept using his left
while Hart placed his whole reliance on
the right .swing. He reached the hollow
of Johnson's neck a few times.
Hart sent Johnson's head back with a
left hander.
Round 16—Hart planted left on Johnson's
throat. Johnson came back with
left on mouth. Under Instructions from
his corner Hart began to use a straight
left. He tilted Johnson's head a couple of
times. Both men were using their
lefts now and both reaching the face.
Hart put in one extra hard left and then
they stood close together and smashed
each other. Hart's right-handers fell on
Johnson's ribs, and Johnson's left and
right on the sides of Hart's head.
Round 17—After a couple of passes,
Hart tilted Johnson's head with a
straight left. Johnson pressed him to
the ropes and got in a right uppercut.
Hart forced him back across the ring
and put In a right on the stomach.
Hart blocked a number of lefts and
rights, and then Johnson got in an uppercut
with right. Hart put in left and
right on face. Johnson backed him to
the ropes and smashed him in .the face.
Hart shook his head and then rushed,
rammed in a right short on the ribs.
Hart was well hammered in this round
and appeared to be tired
Round 18—Hart was there with right
over heart. He then rushed Johnson
and dealt him a right oh the jaw. Johnson
loosened up and reached face with
lefts and, rights. Hart pounded Johnson
over kidneys with right. Johnson
scored on the cheek with right, and then
Hart got back with a swinging right
on chin. They mixed up near the ropes,
Johnson putting in the greatest number
of blows. Hart did not falter an instant.
He drove a right in on Johnson's ribs
and was pressing Johnson into a corner
at the bell.
Round 19—Hart led off with a left to
the mouth and they clinched. Hart
scored with right. Johnson came back
with two straight lefts on face. Hart
reached ribs again and 'followed with
another to the ribs. Hart was making
a target of the blackman's rib's, and
Johnson kept countering him on the
face. Hart drove another to the ribs,
and Johnson missed him on jaw. Hart
put in a full swing right hook and there
was a lot of cheering. McGrath shouted
to Johnson:-"Will you please hit."
Round 20—They went right into clinch
and Greggaihs pulled them apart. Hart
shot in clean straight left on mouth and
then they closed and began grappling
and punching. Greg-gains separated
them several, times. Hart swung left,
which landed over the ear and Johnson
poked in left and right on face. Hart
put in a stiff right on stomach. They
hung together and Greggalns separated
them. Hart ducked Johnson's lelthanders
and smashed right on ribs.
Johnson got in right cross on jaw.
They held on and fought at the ropes,
both using free rights
Flashlight photograph taken, which
caused an Illumination, and tho men
turned and walked to the corners,
thinking it was the end of the round.
Hart discovered his mistake first. He
rushed over and struck Johnson. Then
the official gong sounded the end of the
round. Greggains slapped Hart on the
shoulder and proclaimed him the winner.

In the light of this painstaking round by round , report,[ for which I thank you],allied to the excellent reports, provided by Slakka,Is there ANYONE on this forum who seriously beleives ,or gives any credence to the absurd statement, Mendoza has tried to foist on us as a direct quote from Johnson?

"I don't know of any fighter who was better than me ,when I was in my prime. But there was one fighter who beat me,and he beat me good,I'm talking about Marvin Hart."

I dont believe Johnson would have said that. the guy was an ego maniac to his death. But, I also dont think, when taking into consideration ALL of the available reports. It is out of the question to suggest it was a close a fight.

A Johnson apologists might claim he was robbed here. Robbed implies a bad decision, not a close fight. In the book unforgivable blackness it states Johnson own corner was urging him to pick up the pace in the final rounds.

Even if Johnson deserved the nod over Hart, he's a very lucky fighter in the ring. Johnson should have lost his colored title when Jeanette worked him over in round one, and Johnson went low un-purpose in round two.

Johnson was also lucky to get a draw vs. Jim Battling Johnson in a lineal title fight. Reading the reports, the journeyman Battling Jim was the better on that day.

According to your "quote", Hart beat Johnson good.
That has now been quietly discarded .

It has been generally established, through reports ,and round by round accounts ,that Johnson DESERVED the verdict.

Your manic obsession with traducing Johnson's reputation means that posters cannot take you seriously, because your hate agenda is all too obvious.

Having lost this battle [once again], you now revert to the old chestnut, the draw with Jim Johnson.

Not too long ago you tried mightily to imply this was a scheduled 20 rounder and that Johnson should have lost his title by corner retirement,

Newspaper accounts of the day, put paid to this lie, and you fell silent on the subject for awhile, recharging your bile .

It is a known fact that Johnson broke a bone in his left arm during this fight. Most objective posters would find that a reasonable excuse for a poor showing ,but you are not objective ,or even rational on Jack Johnson.

You accord Vitali Klitschko all the slack imaginable for quitting with a shoulder injury ,against the light hitting Chris Byrd, in a fight Vitali was winning handily.
Yet castigate Johnson for going 10 rounds with a hefty bruiser like Jim Johnson, whom , CBZ describes as 6'3" 220-240lbs.
Jack was 35 years old and, had not fought in a year and a half when he took on Jim Johnson, yet he struggled through the 10 rds to a draw with a broken bone in his arm.

Klitschko was 28 years old, had fought 4 months earlier , and quit in the 9th round.

Double standards.

Johnson and Jeanette met 7 times Jeanette won 1 ,by a dsq in a 6 rounder.
Johnson went low unpurpose? .

You do not know that to have been the case,it is conjecture .

No one on here thinks Jeanette was superior to Johnson.

No one agrees with your bull****, as has been posted on this thread, so do yourself ,and us a favour and change the record.

I dont think it has been established at all. The reports, beyond a couple of personal opinions, some of which came years later from people who werent even there, show it was a close fight.

We agree it was a close fight.
We have gleaned that from the coverage shown .
All newspaper reports on fights that express the writers views of the justice /accuracy of the verdict are personal opinions ,are they not?

What were the NWS No Decs ,if not personal opinion?
Other than Greggains opinion, got any reports that think Hart deserved the verdict?

Actually a thorough analysis has not yet been done which would consist of all bay area paps. All we know as of now are results from the Oakland Trib and S.F. Chronicle and the Chronicle write up is from non other than Alex Gregggains who was the referee and sole arbiter of Harts victory!

Yet even this check em all approach would leave us with the words of 1905 white men only.

Then, let me amend my statement, and say instead .
In the light of fight reports ,summaries ,and round by round analysis, which indicate a close fight.
Is it likely, that Jack Johnson would have said , " Hart beat me, and beat me good ?"
YES OR NO willl do.

Morning Oregonian (Portland, OR) staff correspondent thought that Hart deserved the decision. Although he may have been biased, but still.
