No one wanted to sign Martinez. He was turned down by Top Rank and GBP.
The guy was making 1000 euros per fight. Then Lou signed him, got him the interim WBC title and promised at least 30 000 USD per fight. Now Martinez is fighting on HBO, making 1mil per fight and is the middleweight king.

This is Martinez's big breakout. Even though he is almost 40 he still has MW king reflexes, the man is a certified G and THE most handsome fighter on the planet today.

It doesn't mean a better promoter couldn't have made him bigger. It helps that Sergio did the grind work in looking impressive in his wins. That's key for promoter.

Now when you can make "not much" look like a "whole lot," now that is impressive promoting.

His looks alone should get him many views. And that Latin thing.

Quick story of what I'm talking about:

I was at a party, TV was on as "background Art"...HBO Fights. I was talking to a group of people {mixed group with girls}. But I wanted to see who was fighting so I took my attention off the conversation at hand {and a bit rude in doing so } but it got the others to look at what I was looking at...and not to long after, HBO cameras pin-point Sergio Martinez in the crowd, he smiles and holds up his fist...and the girls next to me light up and say "Who is That?"...and I say, Sergio Martinez...he is MW Champion.
Then they say, "he fights?" and I say, "Yeah; he is good too." Then they ask me when he fights next and that's when I knew, damn...the power of the "Maravilla."

Now if Sergio can draw attention to a bunch of girls at a party that don't watch the sport, then what could have been done to get him more attention simply by looks alone?
It was similar to the Oscar De La Hoya effect....Good looking Kid who can fight = Female audience = Increased Male audience who wants to be around Females.

Victor Ortiz had the same effect with two girls (one especially did not know boxing) I went with at an actual fight he was at. They got a picture with him.
