The fact is he didn't come to American shores until 34. Well past a fighters prime. He is still lineal mw champion. I also didn't say he was I said IF. Reading comprehension my friend.
Ok let c, Ginger (to many think he loss) barely squeeze by a feather fisted Trout and now he is the top dog, common guys he needs to clean up his division, Trout was his first real test and he didn't pass with flying colors...
Last year I would have said Martinez by KO. If they fought at the end of 2013, Id say its a dangerous fight for Martinez but one I would still favor the fading champion to pull out one last hurrah and get the W. Probably by decision though I could still see him pulling out a TKO. Martinez is fading, falling apart, becoming more vulnerable in the ring, and is starting to look his age, and unfortunately for him hes looking his age while using an athletic based style, an athletic based style with quickly declining athletic ability. That kind of style is a recipe for disaster for practically every aging champion who fights like that. If there was ever a time when Canelo would beat Martinez, it would be now.... I think Sergio will be retiring soon so if GBP was smart they should take the risk and try to get Martinez in the ring coming off his layoff in 2014. He will be older, two injuries in a row, coming off a big layoff, and a 'poor' performance. However, it would be a big gamble, as even with all that factored in, I still think Martinez could beat Canelo. Obviously this would be hoping that GBP and HBO mend their relationship.
Canelo is peaking now and Sergio is diminished. But if Sergio can have one inspired fight and if he can hurt Canelo. that makes a difference.
i know exactly what you wrote, what do you think the "based on what?" question was about? you could have adressed the question posed, but instead you chose to complain about sergios late start as if that is an added accomplishment that should bolster his standing. nobody knows what kind of career he would have had if he started earlier because he would have fought different fighters. who has sergio beat that you could throw up in competition with the great middleweights?
I said Canelo would beat Martinez before the Murray fight and that only confirmed my thoughts. Canelo would outbox Martinez and win a clear decision. Martinez is far too easy to hit and wouldn't have enough success against Canelo to steal rounds. Honestly, if Trout fought Martinez, I wouldn't know who to pick either. I think Trout would be a very live underdog there and may pull off the upset. I've liked Martinez for a long, long time but he's not the fighter he once was. He's a long way away from the guy who soundly beat Pavlik.
I bet now that Sergio is a 40 year old man with multiple surgeries and broken hands and knees, urine boy promotions and Oscar g@yla Hoya will finally let ginger boy fight him.
Nobody said it had to be for a title though. If its a non title fight they can fight anywhere, and 157 would be fair to both.
Sergio was a late starter, mate. He has always been a general athlete first, and a sportsman second. If I recall, he went through a cycling career as well as a foray into soccer. Had he picked up boxing gloves from a young age, he may have turned out differently, we do not know. However, supposing he retained his athleticism and boxed in the same style, I posit he would have become an even better boxer though obviously long gone by now as his style does not permit for a decline of talents. Honestly, it's amazing that he is still boxing the way he is at his age despite his late start. Also, I think current Sergio can still UD Canelo. The proximity of one's bad performance to the other's exhibition of Ginger-brand slickness is a bit of a convoluting variable, mmm yes. Sergio, for all of his age, is no Trout. I expect Sergio to dodge, slip, and land on Canelo at this point in time.
Here is the thing with Sergio, He had surgery on his knee and he broke his hand before his fight with Martin Murray. I believed that he came back too fast to fight again. Those injuries don't heal as quickly when you are in your high 30's. Plus training camp takes a few months. That wasn't much time at all to heal (6 1/2 Months??) So I expected a less than stellar performance from Sergio. Now he broke his hand again. I would like to see him heal fully before saying that he is fully "shot" I'm hoping for the best for Serg and I hope he has a few more good fights left in him. Judging from his injuries today he loses to Canelo but a few years ago he would've put up a good fight!
