hey guys, I am looking for some tips on shadow boxing. It should be obvious I know but..... I have just started boxing again (i trained for about 6 months, 2 years ago) at the moment I can only train once a week at the gym, though I have access to a heavy bag everyday. I have watched several videos on youtube etc, just looking for some more basic tips on shadow boxing, getting everything more refined. Punches are coming along okay but things like slips and rolls feel awkward, especially combined with footwork. Can anyone throw me any tips? anything constructive cheers
C'mon RDJ. I have seen this type of vague, semipatronizing response to new people's general questions from you, amy, Relentless and probably others, many times. All of you from what I gather have solid boxing experience to lend to some of these folks. Yea it gets old that they're new but your the admin now, I think its time that to offer something a little more insightful, or nothing at all. It adds an unwanted (I would think) aura of unwelcomeness to the training forum. If your annoyed, maybe add an FAQ section to the training forum with extensive responses to each general question that you can reference newbies too so you don't have to repeat yourself? Because what IS annoying is seeing these unnecessary responses in various threads in the forum. As to the OP's question, your still mastering fundamentals, so do it in front of a mirror and watch yourself. Be a disciplinarian. Make sure to follow the tips your trainer has been telling you. This means working on the punches, and the defensive techniques you've been learning in the gym. Technique is first and foremost, your not trying to serious work out endurance or anything yet. You can do that by running, skipping rope and the hundreds of other excercises out there. The best way to learn technique is from a trainer with experience, there is really no better way. Books and videos only do a minimal amount of good. Try and get to the gym more to get the tips your looking for from your trainer.
Just do it mate.. alot of it! It is so underrated, yet so beneficial. Some of us were known to do it for near on an hour at times. It gets everything going.. it gets your body positioning, your feet moving, you see yourself in the mirror and correct bad habits. A little tip.. do it with your eyes closed every now then. Its great for your balance.
Sorry mate, it wasn't meant like that I seriously did not know what to answer. It was not my intention to come off as a jerk or make him feel unwelcome, nor was I annoyed. I can see why it seemed that way though. My apologies to the original poster. I'm still working on more sticky threads that will answer some of the questions, but I had a busy few weeks and got derailed a bit. Good advice. Now that I think about it more another thing that's important when shadowboxing is pretend there's an opponent in front of you. This will make you look like a ****** to some, especially those that do fitness boxing, but their opinion doesn't matter anyway. Pretend he's throwing punches, slipping yours, angling off after attacking you. Pretend your blocking punches to the body and head, set your imaginary parter up with something by feinting punches etc. Be that ****** Before you know it every mirror you see has you shadowboxing in front of it, and the man monitoring the camera's in the elevator will think you're a ****** too :bbb Seriously I like shadowboxing so much that I often question my sanity, I do it at the weirdest places.
1.Close your eyes when shadowing, helps recognise footwork imperfections regarding blance( you will notice it quickly) 2.Spin on the spot for say 20-30 seconds then stop. Immediately begin to shadowbox as you would do generally and see how well you do. Similar effect to being cracked clean and the ref you are guessing is having a good look at you. 3.Always try to keep yourself guessing regarding your own combo's example..practise your simple but effective combos next round do them backwards, in time your body will adjust to this also, as was mentioned muscle patterns etc Might not be combo's you would instinctavely throw but having more in the vault is never a bad thing. 4. When you leave the elevator do so with arms in the air as if you left the guy sparked out in the corner :thumbsup Hope this helps Hairy
Melbourneborn "A little tip.. do it with your eyes closed every now then. Its great for your balance" I should keep mine open, never noticed ya posted this atsch :good
"Before you know it every mirror you see has you shadowboxing in front of it, and the man monitoring the camera's in the elevator will think you're a ****** too :bbb" Hahah, I thought I was the only who does that. I've been told Im obsessed with myself before because I get in my stance just about everytime I see a mirror. If I am obsessed, it nice to know others are too atleast. That or you were joking, so now I just sound like a weirdo...
everyday i do abit of shadow boxing coming out the shower waiting for my computer to load listening to the radio after doing the toilet
Under the shower. On the toilet. On my bike. In the car (yes, while driving). Waiting for the microwave. Basically everywhere I think no one can see me. When I'm not alone I envision doing it, and sometimes it even shows in subtle body movement but usually no one notices. I think I need to see a shrink :-(
Nah, I do the subtle movement one too. Ill have my feet seperated and Ill just shrug a shoulder sometimes and so on and so on. Can't say I've shadow boxed on the toilet though... :huh I'll have to try it...
