Spoke to a mate this morning who went Hands. Said Cappa was all over the place - the strategy was supposedly all about angles - but it wasn't working for him.
...there's already talk of a Caparello v McConville rematch: Title bout draw stuns confident Blake Caparello by TEO PELLIZZERI - The Moonee Valley Weekly - 7th Dec 2010 Essendon trained boxer Blake Caparello was denied the Australian light-heavyweight title on Friday night in a drawn bout that left his corner confounded. The split-decision draw has ended Caparello's streak of five straight professional wins after he failed to convince the judges he had done enough to defeat belt holder Shane McConville of Queensland. The numbers from Friday's fight at Coburg Town Hall favoured Caparello. He was scored a 99-92 winner by Sydney judge Brad Griffiths, but a 94-95 loser by Dale Westerman and 95-95 tie by Samantha Bulner. The announcement of the scores shocked both camps. Caparello, his corner and hundreds of fans believed he had cone enough to claim the national title. McConville, from Chinchilla, holds onto the Australian light-heavyweight title with his seven-win, no-loss, five-draw record, while Caparello's record is now 5-0-1. But the 24-year-old Greenvale-based Victorian was the story of the night, knocking down McConville in the dying moments of the final round and putting on a performance that delighted his trainer Sam La Bruna. The only thing missing was a belt to show for it. "The whole place, everybody after the fight thought we had won, it's very disappointing," La Bruna said. "Blake's knocked McConville down in the last round, rattled him about four or five times and he was just hanging on. "Blake out-boxed him for 10 rounds." McConville was the more experienced fighter heading into the bout, adopting a strategy of throwing more punches, but Caparello's southpaw stance found the mark with more potency. "Blake got hit by the first two shots but he started boxing McConville from different angles, turning him and spinning him. "In the last round Blake hit him with a straight left, they gave a standing eight count. "He had him covered the whole fight. McConville was throwing a higher volume of punches, but Blake was just rolling and slipping, then hitting back right on the target. "It was a lot better than we expected. His defence was unbelievable." Caparello now has a month off before the focus turns to a re-match, which could be as soon as April.
Can't trust those Victorian judges eh ! The Chinchilla mob could possibly have a different slant on the story. BoxRec has Caparello down to fight on the 1st April Could be a rematch date.
1st April Malvern Town Hall Vic. Caparello V TBA. over 10 rounds. most likely a rematch with Mc Conville.
cant see it happenin in vic again, mcconville camp have told me they will fight anyone else in vic, they enjoy their trips to melb, but the way that blake's trainer has carried on from the start, if they want the title, they are gunna have to come up here & get it
The newspaper report has La Bruna making it sound like Caparello was robbed. Can't really comment, haven't seen the fight yet. Good thing if McConville's team stick to their guns and make any rematch happen in Qld. BoxRec have Caparello at 4 and Shane at 5 in the rankings. Don't know how they work that out.
Hey guys. Not sure whether a re match will happen any time soon but would be great if it did. Nick McConville told me up at the Gold Coast last Saturday nigh that he'd like to promote a re match should it take place. It was an awesome fight and was very close. DVD's are now available.
