This is just a stupid comment. You can put Mayweather on the biggest pedestal you want, but you don't have to knock these type of fighters. Hagler is at worst the 5th ATG middleweight who ever fought and SRL by most accounts is the 2nd best Welterweight ever. No need to disrespect them simply because you're a Mayweather fan.
I'm fine with that, I'm just voicing my opinion. Not knocking Mayweather in the least, but certainly he has at the very least, a different fighting style than say SRL/Hagler or Duran, just as sweet pea did, and to some extent it boils down to preference. I personally prefer the fighters who fight rather than box their way to victory, and of course most of the greats can do both.
I don't think there would be such a ruckus if the outcome of the fight between Pac and Mayweather was preordained. If I had to lay odds on the fight in their respective primes I'd say it was about 55-45 in favor of Mayweather, but I'm sure the odds of Lewis fighting McCall in their first fight would have been much higher in favor of Lewis and you can cite 100's maybe 1,000's of examples where the odds didn't mean anything once the two fighters actually fought.
ofc he'd say that, he did well against Mayweather than Pac. http://www4.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Manny+Pacquiao+Manny+Pacquiao+v+Shane+Mosley+rgtq_QB-gosl.jpg http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mxA-HG_SN...e-Mosley-hits-Floyd-Mayweather-Jr_2448472.jpg
And who exactly is the current (or previous) 'Hagler' he was supposed to fight? Margarito? Paul Williams? Who is (or ever was) going to fill the SRL role on his resume? Pacquiao? It is a faulty and circular premise. You claim his fighting spirit is in question until he gets in the ring with ATG equivalents to Hagler and Leonard, yet you can't name a fighter available during Mayweather's era that YOU would measure up to that level.
That's because there isn't any which is part of my point. To some Wlad is going to be one of the greatest heavyweight of all time based on his record, to others he's not because the competition is such that it's impossible to gauge how good he is because there's no prime Foreman, Frazier, Lewis, Bowe, Holyfield, Tyson etc. in which to measure his abilities against. To some extent the same applies to Mayweather. But back to Mayweather, you're incorrect that I can't name a fighter who would have tested his fighting spirit, Pac would have been a good test in this respect and perhaps GGG at 160 would be now. Look, there's no doubt Mayweather's a special fighter, an ATG, but to at the very highest eshelons of the sport he needs better comp, and to the extend he can't get better comp because they aren't around, well that's still going to affect his legacy, because then you have to speculate about how he would have done against various styles. Hell a prime ODH and/or SSM would have been nice, or a Pryor or ... With a fighter like SRL we know he beat Duran, (1st or 2nd best lightweight of all time), Hearns (one of the best ww of all time) Benetiz (same) and Hagler (top 5 middleweight of all time). so there's no guessing as to how good he really was when the comp level is this good.
i like the purists...pure boxers and pure punchers. i'm a fan of sweet pea and mayweather because i understand that what they do is infiniitely harder and takes more pure talent, concentration and craft than any other style in boxing. it's a lot easier to just go out there and bang away at the other guy without much regard for defense....but as y'all can see, mayweather still had canelo and guerrero and cotto backing up. pure punchers like provodnikov and tyson are my second favorite.
