How does Shane go against the following non-great, but excellent welterweights: Simon Brown Marlon Starling Donald Curry Buddy McGirt Ike Quartey Pipino Cuevas Personally I think his best chances come against Starling and McGirt, but even there I'd say he's only a 50-50 bet. The others might be a little too big and big hitting for him. Am I selling Shane short? How do you see it?
Donald Curry is the only one i would pick to beat him. I think he would hand cuevas his ass personally, but thats my opinion.
I think Mosley was a far better Lightweight. As a Welterweight he doesn't carry the punch & he feels the punches alot more from the bigger Welterweights. He would pretty much go through the list though. The toughest would be Starling and Curry. Possibley Cuevas if Shane chooses to trade(Which he usually does). Would be a disaster. But then again a cautious Shane would win on pionts rather easily. But that's just not his style!
I see Shane being drawn into a slugging match with Cuevas myself la-califa, which is why I see the fight ending badly for Shane. Shane might be able to withsand the power of Cuevas, I do give Shane a lot of credit for being a really tough fighter, but Cuevas was an awesome hitter.
I am not Shane Mosleys greatest fan, but he has a cast-iron chin. Unless we're talking Thomas Hearns power I'm not worried about his chin holding up at welterweight, at 36 he took big shots in every round Vs Cotto, and finished the fight backing Cotto up. My question marks are over his very overrated punching power, and his ability to break down pure boxers with prominent jabs, like Winky Wright. Even Cotto worked his jab relentlessly (Not neccessarily common for him) to throw Mosely off his game, and ended up outboxing him. Fantastic fighter though in fairness, it's difficult to completely dismiss him against anyone at welterweight.
Mosley has a shot at anyone at Welter. Personally I think Mosley's talent exceeded his actual in-ring accomplishments.
Cuevas though might just be the only welterweight that punches harder than Thomas Hearns. Even so, I think Mosley would be too cute for Pipino to land much.
Another steroid fraud. Is Mosley assumed to be "clean" for these hypothetical fights, or is he at his BALCO-fueled best?
Mosley had a huge build and great power for a welter. Mosely was a customer of the infamous BALCO Labs. BALCO labs supplied steroids to many West Coast based atheltes. Mosley also had to testify in front of a grand jury about his dealing with BALCO, but the testimony is still sealed I think. To date, I do not think Mosely has ever tested positive test; however, he is linked with many known cheaters. Its hard to give him the full benefit of the doubt.
But what was BALCO's claim to fame? What set them apart from all of the gym-juicers who could get you a bucket of Nandrolone with a phone call? BALCO was a trade secret amongst elite athletes precisely because they designed steroids that could not be detected by currently-implemented testing programs! Their signature drugs "The Cream" and "The Clear" were both designed as anabolic agents for the specific use of athletes who knew they would be tested for steroids.
If you wanna know my honest opinion buddy, you should have put breland on this list, thats the guy that would give mosley hell. Tall talented slick boxers always beat shane, unless mosley gets to his glass jaw.
We can't discount Vernon Forrest power either, which nearly stopped Shane. I don't think it's Hearns power or nothing. Shane took a good shot, but he was by no means impervious to anything bar the biggest hitter ever at 147. I think Tito, Cuevas, Robinson, maybe even Ike Quartey power could stop Mosley. He did struggle with rangey jabbers. He didn't have the easiest time with strongish fighters who could stand and trade with him either. Thus me thinking the likes of Cuevas, Quartey etc. are in with good shots of beating him.
