Shane Mosley vs. Anthony Mundine RBR

I'll still do the full detailed breakdown I was unable to do earlier for posterity, and since the ESPN player is available only to US and Canadian ESPN subscribers...

 

Round 1

Mundine is hanging back while Mosley jabs the body. Mundine leans and dips a bit to his right, catching Mosley's jabs on the bicep. Mosley charges in with a 1-2, grazing as Mundine turns. Jab in the belly by Mosley. Jab up top by Mosley. Mundine catches the jab on his forearms and then drops a double jab of his own to back Mosley up. Their feet tangle and Raul Caiz warns them about inadvertently tripping each other. Mosley trots left and catches the Mundine jab, pinched in between his wrists. Lead right by Mosley, range-finding. Jab by Mosley, reaching for Mundine's chin as Mundine leans backward. Slapping right on the body by Mosley.

Round 2

Mundine is stuffing the jab into Mosley's face peskily and jumping in behind it. Mosley is scooting backward, dragging his feet flat on the canvas, holding both arms folded out in front of himself to pick shots off. Mosley clinches when Mundine presses in close. Mundine grinds his elbows on the inside and pushes down on Mosley with his bigger arms. Mosley looks weaker in the clinch and struggles to wrestle Mundine off. Flush jab on the eye by Mundine stinging Mosley and causing him to hop away, blinking. Mosley is holding both arms out straight and looking to physically bar Mundine's way inside, rather than spending the energy to snap out a jab. Light body shots by Mosley as Mundine comes forward, guard up tight around his face, jabbing down into Mosley's face. Mosley crouches back and springs up with a jab, but Mundine fades outside to make him miss and resumes stalking.

Round 3

Mundine is walking in to drape himself over Mosley and exert more physicality as in the 2nd. Mosley lands a left hook up close and then drops an overhand right on Mundine's skull as he backs out. Mundine is a little shaken but manages to walk into Mosley and bump him into reverse, digging his forearms and elbows into his middle. Flush jabs by Mundine. Reaching 1-2 by Mundine, falling just short as Mosley backs up into the ropes and then steps out to center ring. Mosley tries to grab but Mundine exploits his longer reach by tucking in his stomach to deny Mosley's attempt while landing a flush 1-2 on the face. Mosley is knocked back on his heels by a lead right hand. Mundine slips a jab bending his neck and then shaves the front curtains of the miniature Jheri curl of Mosley, symmetrically, with a jab on the right temple and cross on the left. Clinch as Mundine lands a jab. Overhand right by Mosley blocked. Mosley windmills the big overhand right and misses a few, driving Mundine into the ropes. He grazes Mundine high on the head but is caught himself by a right hand as Mundine recovers and gains superior position coming in low and centered up on Mosley.

29-28 Mundine

 

Round 4

Mundine is tapping Mosley with the jab, keeping his guard up, elbows in tight by his ribs, jogging to his left and never staying put more than an instant after scoring on Mosley. Right hand between the gloves timed by Mosley, rocking Mundine. BIG right hand by Mundine as Mosley is wallowing in admiration of his punch and following lazily after him. Mosley is VERY BADLY HURT, and flops into Mundine, encircling his waist and holding on. Mosley's knees scuff the canvas but no ruling from Caiz to call it a knockdown. Mosley sticks out a defensive jab backing up, then springs inside every few steps to dive and hold. Mundine shoves Mosley back with both arms, fixing the jab on his eye line. Mosley is looking vulnerable, stumbling as he backtracks.

Round 5

Clinch. Break. Mosley sweeps a left hook downstairs and ties up. Mosley doubles a few light jabs on the chest as he moves in and ties up again. Nothing but jabs into the chest by Mosley as he keeps the right glove up defensively by his jaw. Right hand lead by Mundine, stunning Mosley. Mundine is dropping hatchet jabs on him from outside, beyond where Mosley can reach him with his own headshots. Mosley keeps diving in, slapping the body and holding. Mundine plants a hard 1-2 on Mosley's dome after shoving him out into range, and lands a few rabbit punches when Mosley insistently worms his way in to clinch low. Mundine walks Mosley down, catching his light woodpecker triple-jab on the high guard. Mundine sticks a straight jab into Mosley's throat and Mosley jumps through it to clinch. Clubbing right hand by Mundine as Mosley scurries around him, looking to grab from a different angle. Weak jabs waved out by Mosley, backing up and covering his escape. Right hand lead by Mundine grazes.

Round 6

Mosley clinches with all his might, forced by Caiz to let go but immediately resuming his march inside to grab once more. Mundine is picking his spots, letting Mosley come to him and easily sniping with single jabs, lead rights, and 1-2s all flush on the face. Mosley is waving the pretense left jab out, looking to gain his way in to clinch. Mosley spins fist over fist down by his waist, then quickly raises them in a triangle overhead to block Mundine's jab when he sees it gearing up. Double jab, right hand by Mosley, briefly looking fired up, but getting blocked and then out-muscled in the ensuing clinch. Mundine gets Mosley to react to a right body shot feint. Mosley jerks and spreads his arms. Mundine starts to set loose a jab on the exposed prey but pulls it at the bell.

Jack Mosley yells at Shane on his stool after the sixth, telling him to stow his complaints about his sore back and to go out there and get to work.

Raul Caiz is a bit more concerned with the health of his son, who claims to be nearly immobilized with pain.

I wouldn't call it a marked improvement from the way he looked in the Geale rematch - in which he was thoroughly outclassed by a not-quite-top-five middleweight...thus showing his actual level.

Whatever the historic implications of stopping Mosley, what happened today should not signify that Mundine is ready to mix it up with the world champions in any of the several divisions he seems to roam like a scavenger.
