I'm not sure he was a "brawler", but he certainly preferred to slug it out than outsmart his opponent, and he was often capable of mixing the two very well. People often categorized him as the kind of guy who wants to beat you at your own game, and 9 times out of 10, he could do it.

    Well said.

Shane had a lot of things going for him in his prime (and even a bit past it), tangibles and intangibles:

    Excellent Speed
    Excellent Power (esp. @ lightweight)
    Excellent Chin
    Excellent Killer/Finishing Instincts
    ATG Heart
    Decent Movement

...but yeah, dumb as a bag of hammers from day one. :yep

I think his Ring IQ is pretty underrated. Being able to control the fight against DLH, thoroughly outboxing Collazo past his physical prime, setting up the shots he did against Taylor and Johnson...he could be very sneaky at times, and could adapt in ways that greatly accelerated his success within rounds that didn't come from just pure speed. Being able to time and counter himself very well is, I think, the reason Roach kept Manny away from him when he was still an active threat.

I always ask myself why fighters don't use the jab more PERIOD. It's so basic and fundamental and helps you set up the power shots or allows you to close the distance but you always see "elite" fighters barely bothering with it.

Doesn't matter. The right hand that follows it was so legit it wasn't funny.

Talking ish about the SSM competing now is pointless. See the old version. That is the real SSM.

It's really just a tool to measure the right hand. Then again, if he did have a good jab he wouldn't be nearly as fun to watch. I'm not saying everyone should abandon the jab to please fans but if everyone fought the same boxing would suffer IMO.

thats because Margarito was a stationary target .... east to hit

pacquiao landed hundreds of punches on margarito as he was
stood right in front of him like a punch bag

but pacquiao could barely land on old man mosley with a blister on his foot

its just the abillity to time & slip the jab :deal

shane landed alot of jabs on margarito/mayorga/cotto

but mayweather/mora/pac had the abillity to slip shanes jab

    thats all :deal

shane's jab is more off a range finder & trigger to release his
    ' VICIOUS ' Hooks :deal

It wasn't so bad. His "Lighter" weight days were his best. Sometimes as fighters get older they may forget their skills.

he has a jab, but he likes to use it a lot to set up his big right hand. That's why he trouble with boxers sometimes. But he's got a stiff jab when he actually uses it.

  11. Never had a problem with it, it is distinctive he has always made it work for him. Shane Mosley is an elite fighter whose best characteristics are behind that jittery jab. I bet it has enough power to be respected

I remember when mosley returned to welterweight he said that at junior middleweight he had to hit guys with more power to try and get the bigger man's respect. do you think this mentality ,with an emphasis on power punching had anything to do with his abandonment of the jab and forgotten skills in the latter half of his career?

first of all power boxing had nothing to do with strength training, it was a style jack mosley developed where shane would throw short bursts of power shots.

He uses it to set up his now non existent right hand. He used to be able to pull the trigger on it. But the second rd against Mayweather was the last time Mosley would be great before becoming completely gun shy. Its not his fault though, this is the fate of all fighters that stick around too long. Its more neurological than physical. The brain just doesnt sent that signal anymore.
