I would not rate him over them either, but could certainly argue both for and against DLH (and possibly Trinidad) as far as ranking goes...but to be 6th best during an era is pretty darn good by my book.
Antonio Diaz(look at his recent resume going into the Mosley fight) Jesse James Leija(had just beaten Azumah Nelson) Phillip Holliday Fernando Vargas 2x(sure he was past it but so was SSM and Vargas was coming off good wins vs Joval and Castejllo) Oscar De la Hoya 2x(say what u will about the rematch cause Shane beat a prime Oscar in the 1st fight clearly noboddy had ever did that and still hasnt unless ur name is Hopkins or Floyd) Luis Collazo Thats no shabby
Who is saying Mosley SHOULD be ranked higher than any of those you mentioned? You name the best in the buisness and say Shanes resume isn't strong enough to be ranked higher. No ****. This is news to who?
Maby they were talking h2h /prime for prime, if yes then he would have given any previously mentioned fighter hell of a fight. Allready won against prime Oscar, maby 40/60 fight against trinidad at 147, and 55/45 fight against Floyd at 135 IMO.
True, outside of his wins over De La Hoya, his resume gets pretty thin. His success in 3 weight divisions, great record at lightweight, and wins over highly regarded (but not great) opposition are enough for me to call him one of the greats, just not one of the all time greats.
Shane was an absolute monster at 135, destroyed solid fighters like Diaz and Lieja. Said to hell; with 140 and beat a prime DLH at 147. Has solid wins over many many solid fighters. . . . Holiday was a solid, undefeated champ, John John Molina was a good fighter, Rivera was a solid first WW fight, Shannon Taylor was tough as hell and undefeated at the time. Vargas was still a tough opponant in the first fight and COllazo was a prime fighhter who many thought would beat Shane. Plus he was barely outpointed by a prime Cotto.
mosley was classy in defeat. If you look closely you will see him nooodding his head when cotto was announced the winner and some people thought that fight was a draw he didnt complain about the decision in the forrest rematch either
that was one fight. tyson was classy when he lost to holyfield the first time and lewis. doesn't mean he was always classy when he lost mosley claimed he won the forrest rematch.
If that is the criteria for classy, then there are very few classy boxers who agreed with a losing decision, especially close ones...man you must not like many boxers!
there's a difference between merely being classy, and "being the classiest guys in the last 15 years", as has been previously claimed. just because shane is a likeable sort of fellow, it doesn't mean he shouldn't be held to the same standards and criticism that others fighters are.
Personally, I am not a big Shane phan. But I have enjoyed some of his fights, even in losing efforts. I have always felt he brought his A game, and was willing to fight not just looking for points (perhaps part of his downfall...if you can call it that!). I have seen very little that makes me question his class...and even less that makes me question his greatness...Certainly one of the best of the last 10-15 years IMO!
