Weak resume, because he convincingly lost the vast majority of his biggest fights. Why you have mentioned an ancient Leija, sub-standard Collazo, shot Vargas and past-prime Mayorga is beyond me. All of these guys were weak opponents and wins of very little value. And absolutely no way in hell did Shane deserve the decision in the ODLH rematch. I had it to Oscar by 5 points, it wasn't even a close fight. Shane's big fight record is: 2 wins (OLDH 1, Margarito) 8 losses (Forrest x2, Winky x2, ODLH II, Cotto, Mayweather, Pacquiao) Though Shane looked pretty shot by the time he met Floyd and Pac, so to be fair I'd trim it to: 2-6 Still a **** big-fight record for a supposed HOF fighter. :deal
You could say the same about De La Hoya he lost most of his real biggest fights but he is still a first ballot hall of famer so why not mosley? Who like it or not according to the judges that count beat De La Hoya twice!
I think his prime demonstration of abilities and very good resume get him inside the 100. Oscar's resume is better, but in their first encounter Mosley showed he was the better man. That has to count for something, on top of everything else. I'd rank him an ATG above around 65 or so off the top of my head.
Outside of Cotto, Shane lost to Forrest and Wright very very clearly in both fights. With Oscar a number of question marks surround his fights with Whitaker and Quartey as well as his fights with Trindad and Mosley too. Fans are split on those fights (and some on the Mayweather fight). At the least you could say Oscar was competitive in his losses or you could say he was robbed or did the robbing at the other extreme. Although I do think Shane is an ATG, I personally have him hanging around with the Barrera and Morales crowd. That win he got over Oscar the first time round was a massive win, one of the best boxing has seen.
Stylisticlly Forrest and winky wright were all wrong for Shane so you gotta give him props for wanting to get in with them again albeit in defeat though. It's a shame Mosley if he does retire and oscar left the sport on those last performances they had against pacquiao, almost shadows of there primes really.
Interesting, his biggest wins are ODLH and Margo. He was doping against ODLH and Margo had just been discovered with illegal wraps. Vargas & Mayorga were past it. That leaves Collazo & Leija...
De La Hoya's big fight performances are better. He clearly deserved the decisions vs Tito and in Mosley II. Quartey and Whitaker are pick 'em fights (I actually think Oscar lost both fights by 1 point, but those defeats were nowhere near as damning as the dominations SSM suffered to Forrest and Winky over the course of 4 fights). And in the same way as Shane, ODLH was also well past his sell-by date by the time he went in against Floyd and Pac, so I excuse him for those fights the same way as I do Shane. (So ODLH's other loss was to B-Hop, while SSM's was to Miguel Cotto - go figure). In addition to the big fight angle, ODLH won more world titles, won titles in more weight classes, and compiled a much deeper, stronger, better resume throughout his career. Therefore, ODLH is a 1st ballot for me, but Shane is not.
Lets not forget SSM started at Lightweight. He went to Welter and when to big names from the welters move up he followed them.
