fighters, more than most sportsmen, 'feel the pull' i think. it's not about maintaining a record or preserving a legacy and so on.... it's more about who you are and finding it hard to not want to challenge yourself - and for a lot of fighters there aren't many options away from fighting. also, being sharp and being good at fighting is very ego-driven and gives you a healthy mindset. i know that doesn't sit too well when you're past your best, but you try telling that to someone who has 'never say die' for a motto.
