Zab speed allowed him to get to cotto and inflect damage.. Shane on the other hand was out classed by cotto's speed and had to rely on his sheer strength to wear cotto down in the later rounds.

Thats more a matter of styles. Cotto has power so you can't just run in there and use your speed, you have to pick your shots. Also Cotto is very elusive and evasive.

Shane has speed he just chooses not to use because as hes gotten older he throws one punch at a time. Watch the Margarito fight and you'll see when he throws combos he still has the same speed he had when he was young.
