If Shannon Briggs is to defeat Lucas Browne and capture a version of the world heavyweight title to end his career will he be on route to the HOF? Briggs has had a very up and down career that has seen him arguably capture 2 world titles in 2 different decades if he is to beat Browne it'll be his 3rd in 3 decades, also he has the most first round KO's ever recorded by a heavyweight champion. With these credentials do think with another title he'd be deserving of a HOF induction?
Definitely Not! With the exception of a fortunate late rally over Sergei Lyakovich, I don't think Shannon Briggs has a single win over an elite fighter in their prime in his ENTIRE career. Non HOF fighters like Ron Lyle would have beaten the **** out of Briggs. In his prime, he got his ass handed to him by Darroll Wilson on the HBO night of young heavyweights and he never tried to avenge that loss. Shortly after that fight, David Tua blew Wilson out of the water in short order. Briggs is one of the most fortunate, well managed farces in heavyweight history.
I don't think he has the credentials. The most first round knockouts of any heavyweight of all time and some serious longevity, but that's about it.
IF BRIGGS WINS .... maybe. If Briggs wins, he'll be 45 (he turns 45 in December). He'll be the second-oldest man to win a heavyweight title (George Foreman was also 45, but a few months older). Briggs will also have one of the highest KO percentages among the heavyweight champions. Briggs will have faced EIGHT men who held a heavyweight title - including Hall of Famers George Foreman and Lennox Lewis, possible future Hall of Famer Vitali Klitschko, and alphabet champs like Frans Botha, Ray Mercer, Sergei Liakhovich, Sultan Ibragimov, and Lucas Browne. And, IF HE WINS, he'll be 4-3-1 against those champs - winning record. He was the lineal champ when he outpointed Foreman in 1997. He won the WBO belt against Liakhovich in 2006. And he could win the WBA belt in 2016. 19 years between his first title and last is kind of amazing. Foreman went 21 years between his first title win and his second, so 19 is pretty much up there. 10 years between his second and third title wins is pretty amazing, too. (Only a couple have won a heavyweight title nine or 10 years apart - like HOFs Ali, Lewis and Holyfield.) But 19 years between from his first to last title wins ... I think only Foreman edges him. Briggs could definitely make a case ... IF HE WINS. I don't see him winning, though.
I don't think he has a legitimate case win or lose against an unproven fighter like Lucas Browne. Briggs ,and, quite frankly, Browne, have done NOTHING to earn a title shot. In any other decade, neither of them wouldn't have even been in the top 20 at this point. This title fight is a farce.
Hes put enough time in ,I see others with far less credentials through out boxing that get a ton of hype without real merit.
I agree that there have been some undeserving inductees in the past. But, inducting Briggs would be setting the bar to an all time low.
Browne already won the WBA heavyweight title when he knocked out Chagaev. If you knock out the reigning champ, you are proven. The post-fight results and controversy about whether he was drugged by the Russians aside. This is more or less a title defense by Browne. The last time he was in the ring, he had his hand raised and was awarded the WBA belt.
This content is protected I dont think Lyle would beat Briggs,he wasn't as fast and didnt have his chin, what lyle did to Foreman was not the rock chin Foreman who fought Briggs, and briggs injured his hand early in the fight.Briggs also knew how to ride on a boat.lol
