So Briggs replaces Johansson in 1960 vs Patterson. Briggs probably hits as hard as Johansson. Could he blast Patterson away?

I hate to do this but I picked Briggs to win. While Floyd is a better fighter than Briggs he simply didn’t have the chin to take on a much bigger juggernaut of a puncher. He was kept away from those types of fighters for a reason.

If Floyd makes it to the fourth round without getting nailed he ultimately wins on points. I wouldn’t bet a penny on that though.

"Cannon" Briggs has a number of first round knockouts. He even rocked Lewis in the first round. I see this fight as Patterson Vs. Liston, although I'm not comparing Shannon Briggs and Sonny Liston.
    Sweet dreams of nostalgia.

But Briggs was relatively slow and could leave himself open

I don't think I've ever seen Patterson win a fantasy fight here

He was slow later in his career but watch some of his earlier fights. He had a great combination of speed and power but he definitely had defensive flaws.

I'll take Briggs just on the chin difference. Briggs is cast iron whereas Floyd has a genuine biscuit chin at heavyweight.

Briggs gets him early and blasts him out. If I’m this hypothetical world they rematched, Patterson stops him late. I just think he gets caught too easily early on in fights and his durability is poor.

He really doesn’t match up well in fantasy fights to a lot of men truthfully. Especially not big punchers.

I think Patterson could outbox him TBH

Patterson wears Briggs down by forcing a higher tempo and TKOs him late.

I think he's disrespected here because of the two eggs he laid against Liston. (He evened the score twice against Ingemar so that shouldn't be held against him.)

But at the same time I think Liston is equally disrespected here by the focus on those two fights as if they were some kind of aberration.

I am not saying he WOULD, I am saying peak Liston COULD have knocked out any heavyweight who ever stepped into a ring in the first round. Any of them. Mic drop. It wasn't as if Tommy Burns or Marvin Hart or Bonecrusher Smith knocked out Floyd. Floyd had zero to be ashamed of for what happened in Chicago and Vegas.

Some fighters are just kryptonite to others. George Foreman was kryptonite to Joe Frazier. Sonny Liston was kryptonite to Floyd Patterson.
