To be fair, it's a very morbid thought that doesn't sit well in my mind. I'm also a big believer in how important heart is to a fighter, so my brain refuses to see Briggs winning

I just see Johnson's master defense blocking Brigg's monster shots, then when Briggs is puffing, him going in for the kill with his famous uppercut

Does Johnson even throw modern, recognizable left hooks on film?

@mcvey? You're the expert on that one. Any youtube footage you can refer me to?

So do we throw out all the defences of heavyweight champions until their average challengers comply with current heavyweight strictures?

Johnson's 196lbs! This should bury once and for all the idea that he feasted on smaller shorter challengers.

Fair enough, on this study I got his jabs mixed up with long hooks, but looking at this study Briggs wouldn`t be able to land any hooks, because of Johnson`s glove control anyway.

    Agreed.

But he was never aligned with the big promoters. Tough sport when you don't have the backing of the power brokers. But at the end of the day, all he brought to the table was being a guy capable of scoring an upset 1 night for a title, at best. No way he is making a bunch of successful defenses. That's a whole different championship pedigree and he does not possess that type of skillset. But on 1 given night, he could get lucky---much like the Liakhovich bout. But that guy was the same type himself--a one night type guy.

But like I say, in 20 years guys like Briggs will do better over the test of time because of their numbers & size. Folks will look at all those early ko's and not bother to look into the actual form of the guys he was fighting. So many grade C opponents & he sure is devastating against that type. His big size and 1 win over a guy like Foreman will be credentials enough.

Boxing boards in 2040 will look at a guy like Briggs--and his numbers--and side with those numbers compared to say the numbers of an Evander Holyfield.

Briggs hand speed, and skills were light years beyond Willard's. The issue with Briggs is stamina, and his weight. Not skills or power. If people make excuses for Johnson's age, the same can apply for Briggs.

Judging by how quickly Choysnki capped Johnson, and how Ketchel who didn't land much hurt him, Briggs when he lands could make it a quick night.
