A lot of people claim that the knockout scored by Primo Carnera against World Heavyweight Champion, Jack Sharkey was a fake. I am not one of those people. It looks real to me, but maybe this nonsense started from some of the people who watched the fight live. Maybe they just didn't see the punch, but on film, you can see it. Or at least I can. Thoughts anyone?
No it wasn't. I believe Nat Fleischer was at ringside and described it as a terrific uppercut on the chin. Sharkey got overly aggressive after stunning Carnera with an overhand right, ducked down in his traditional style and got caught. That's all there is to it.
It's quite obvious that Carnera hits him with an uppercut with his full body weight behind it. I'd hope that he'd be a little less strenous if the fight was fixed, Sharkey gets decimated.
I don't think so but Ernie Schaaf did end up dying after his KO loss to Carnera. Many thought it was suspicious due to Carnera knocking out Schaaf with a jab.
"Duffy and his associates werent taking any unecessary chances of anything happen to their well exploited giant, but they did experience a couple of close calls, particularly with the veteran George Godfrey in Philadelphia, and Leon Bombo Chevalier,in Oakland. In several other cities their performances, didnt meet with the unqualified approval of the fans and critics. For the most part ,worn out campaigners like Chuck Wiggins,Pat McCarhty,Big Boy Peterson,Cowboy BillOwensFarmer Lodge,Sully Montgomery,Neil Clisby,Ko Christner, and Geroge Cook ,were ressurected from the fistic graveyard for the occasion, In most of the" contests",the set up was of the kind that made it allmost impossible for Carnera not to win. Nat Fleischer " The Heavyweight Championship". The Ring Magazine gives an annual award ,"The Fighter Of The Year", traditionally this has gone to the new Heavyweight Champion.Carnera won the title in 1933.That year The Ring did not give an award.
Well I don't think it was a fake, but just incase some new evidence comes out and proves us wrong, please don't post that pic.
I'm glad everyone seems to agree. I have never actually asked anyone else's opinion about this before. I think it was on ESPN Classic that someone mentioned that it was rumored to be a fake. Immediately, I thought that was bullsh*t. It's nice to see that you guys aren't complete f*ckin' idiots.
No doubt that Carnera built up his record against tomato cans and washed up fighters. But this doesn't mean his win over Sharkey wasn't legitimate. Fleischer certainly seems to think Carnera was legit in this article he wrote for The Pittsburgh Press: http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...IBAJ&dq=nat fleischer carnera&pg=1566,3725731
Can you think of another rated fighter Carnera kod with one punch? I have never seen a man fall like that after being hit with an uppercut. Sharkey claimed he saw a vision of Earnie Schaaf immediately prior to the "knockout". When Schaaf crumpled to the floor from an innoccuous jab from Carnera , Hype Igoe who was ringside shouted"the only way I will beleive this is if he dies", Schaaf was hospitalized, unconscious,he briefly regained consciousness spoke to his mother then relapsed into a coma and died. From a complete f*ckin idiot.
I have no idea but he did not seem to view Carnera that negatively. http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=_8wgAAAAIBAJ&sjid=2WoFAAAAIBAJ&dq=nat fleischer&pg=3414,2519873
From round one, Primo was mauling and clubbing him all over the ring. I just think Sharkey came in vastly overconfident after the ease with which he won their first match, while Carnera had learned and improved from that experience. Primo delivered that right uppercut well, pivoting his right foot towards Jack as he drove up with it. I don't buy the notion it was fixed. Carnera was much more aggressive in this rematch, and far better prepared, ready to go another 15 rounds with Sharkey if need be.
