It was a real punch and you can tell, look at the hips, look at Sharkeys reaction, look at what Sharkey was doing when he got hit. Plainly, reputation or not Carnera landed a good punch and Jack made a mistake. Keep your opinion but if it’s based solely on film… it’s pretty clearly wrong and a knockout.
Perhaps take comfort in it being more Jack's mistake then Carnera's genius? Sharkey was dipping in his usual way, I think he was expecting Carnera to follow him to the ropes with a straight right, he got low, maybe he didn't notice he wasn't outside Carnera's lead shoulder (Think Marcinao) and so still vulnerable to the right uppercut from there, when he was knocked into the ropes his feet left him in a very unsafe place to do what he did, watch Sharkey's legs when he get's hit... how he goes down, how hard Carnera is throwing that shot pay attention to the hips. You can see Sharkey do all the same pulling back and getting caught here or there in even his best fight against Maloney, he uses a lot of excessive head movement that’s really just how he moved. Pretty sweet shift at 1:18 This content is protected
Rabbit punching too right? Dempsey did that a lot, I remember it against Tunney annoying me a lot, but if the ref is gonna let you…
Dempsey came up via a career path that was very much based on survival instinct. I’ll give Dempsey credit for not moaning when fouls were returned in kind. When an angry Sharkey whacked him back, the Mauler just kept walking back toward his corner nonchalantly, with a look that seemed to imply “fair play to you”. Suffice to say, a Dempsey - Marciano fight would’ve had its fair share of “not so” MOQ tactics involved. The ref could either pull them up upon each and every infraction OR just let them slug it out in an equitably dirty fight.
