I landed an overhand right on the corner of my sparring partners forehead, now I'm getting a sharp pain shooting up my 2nd metacarpal; I'm also unable to make a fist or extend my index finger.

Should I assume it's broken? Won't have time to go to A&E due to work! I have a fight friday, I suppose it doesn't need a genius to work out that I shouldn't go anywhere near a ring with one good hand, sort of like a footballer with one foot!lol

P.S. I've broken a bone in my hand before and all I got was some buddy taping, which I felt I could've done myself. Would you still advise seeing a specialist?

I would always advise seeing a specialist.

Especially if you meet any of these criteria:

    You can afford it.

    You have insurance.

    It's free.

I guess those are all kind of one and the same. It would be pretty dumb not to go to the Dr if you were injured and filled those criteria.

Which bone is the second metacarpal? Is it the bone that is part of the palm of your hand?, or is it the bone that makes up the first part of the actual finger?

Best bet is to see a doctor asap. If it's broken you'll want it taken care of, and if it's not you may be able to get away with just ice and rest and you may still be able to fight depending on the pain.

Don't mess around with your hands, they're important for boxing as well as for everyday life.
